New Playhouse Designed to Match Exterior of McKune House
 | | Lisa McClure, Youth & Teen Librarian, stands in new McKune playhouse, built by Michigan Recreational Construction and made possible by the Friends of Chelsea District Library. |
Stop in and check out our new addition to KidSpot, a playhouse modeled after the exterior of the McKune house! This project was headed up and painted by Lisa McClure, Youth and Teen Librarian, constructed by Michigan Recreational Construction and funded by the Friends of Chelsea District Library. "I got the idea for the playhouse because our little playhouse/puppet theater was very flimsy, and sometimes it would come apart, so it obviously wasn't designed for commercial use. I started out by making very preliminary sketches based on the existing playhouse, but much stronger. I wanted to make it large and strong enough for older kids too, with a large back opening so a parent could come in or a special needs child could sit in a standard chair in there, says McClure, "Once Karen (Head of Youth and Teen Services) approved the early drawings, I drew three detailed plans for the front. We went to the Friends for approval for funds, and they went wild over the McKune style, approving $1,500 for the building and for paint."
The playhouse was reassembled in the lobby for National Library Week. It has been a huge hit with kids and parents alike. Stop in and take a look!

Meet Beth | Circulation Assistant
 | | Beth is reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (again) | When I was 17 my family went to Florida to visit my grandparents. A normal visit to Florida would include the going to the beach and other Florida fun, and this is what I expected to do. But my Grandpa came up to me and asked,"Have you ever read this?" It was a copy of The Hobbit. I hadn't read it, so I sat down and opened it. For the next couple of days I sat indoors and read it and loved it. When I got back to Michigan, I continued on with The Lord of the Rings and became a huge admirer of all the books written by J. R. R. Tolkien. But The Hobbit has a special place in my heart, because my Grandpa shared with me something that he loved. -Beth |
