Stories of Chelsea
A Community History Project

Stories of Chelsea

The Chelsea District Library's Stories of Chelsea project involves conducting videotaped interviews with Chelsea-area residents about different topics of Chelsea history.

This program serves as a significant step in the library's dedication to preserving a record of American social and family life as experienced in the Chelsea area. The topics scheduled to be covered in Stories of Chelsea are:

· One Room Schoolhouses
· WWII Veterans
· Farmers
· Village Life
· Local Landmarks

The Stories of Chelsea Team is still filming interviews for the Farmers project.

This topic is focused on the Chelsea-area's farming heritage. We'd like to preserve the stories of farmers and about farming both then and now.

If you have a suggestion of active or retired Chelsea-area farmers who you think could contribute valuable stories to the project, please suggest them here. Please provide the person's name and contact information if possible, along with a description of their connection to farming or Chelsea life.

Hometown Libraries: A History of Community Involvement for the Love of Reading
Thursday, January 13 | 7:00 - 8:30pm | McKune Room

Bookshelves in McKune House
Join the Historic Chelsea Interest group for a fascinating evening with Grace Shackman, local historian, WCC and Adult Learners Institute instructor, and author of four books about Washtenaw County history as well as the long-running "Then and Now" column for the Ann Arbor Observer. Grace will explain how the first libraries in Chelsea, Manchester, Dexter, and Saline were started by civic-minded citizens as a volunteer effort. Originally located in makeshift quarters, they grew into buildings of their own. Since passage of District Library legislation in 1989 allowing for more stable funding, all four libraries have grown substantially into the modern institutions we enjoy today.
