In Focus: Stop Torture in Health Care - A New Campaign Tackles Abuse in Medical Facilities
Contributed by Lydia Guterman, Campaign Coordinator, Open Society Foundations

Health care settings should be places where human rights are realized. Yet, too often, they are places where human rights are severely abused, sometimes amounting to torture and ill-treatment. Patients from socially marginalized groups -- people living with HIV, people with life-limiting illnesses, sexual and gender minorities, people who use drugs, and people with intellectual disabilities or mental health problems - are at particular risk of experiencing severe mental or physical suffering instead of quality care. Their contact with health facilities is too often characterized by physical abuse, insults, invasion of privacy, forced medical procedures, or denial of treatment. Read more

Cultural Competency in Human Rights Grantmaking: What's Power Got To Do With It?
Have you ever wondered whether our human rights grantmaking -- which attempts to address the root causes of poverty, injustice, and inequity -- actually reinforces or addresses powerlessness and exclusion among our grantees? This Institute will examine how power and privilege are redistributed through the act of grantmaking and will explore successes and challenges of "cultural competency" in grantmaking. Organized by the International Development Exchange (IDEX). Register now!

IHRFG's Funders Learning Visit to Cairo, Egypt: May 8-10, 2012. IHRFG and Ariadne, the European Human Rights Funders Network, are jointly organizing this three-day learning visit for funders interested in emerging democracies and constitutional reform in the wake of and amidst political transformation in the Middle East and North Africa. Participants will expore: How can funders respond strategically to fast-changing political, economic and social transitions? How can philanthropy act most effectively in supporting popular movements and transitional justice in the Middle East and North Africa, and beyond? What are the opportunities for collaborating with local/Middle Eastern grantmakers? Registration will open in December 2011.
