The Blackberry

Greetings!
The Blackberry is the Ava Gardner of berries.
Lush. Dark. Tart.
Single-handedly able to incriminate a white shirt
in a way that lipstick can only dream of.
The pinnacle of Summer's bounty.
The summit of seduction.

Hot Buttered Blackberries with Buttermilk French Toast
start the day with a little sin
One skillet full of bursting, caramelising blackberries.
Another sizzling with fat, eggy slices of brioche.
Buttery. Syrupy. Stacked & Sticky
Marie Antoinette had it right; 'Let them eat Brioche!'
I quite lose my head over it all.

Blackberry, Creme Fraiche and Brown Sugar Ice Cream
take a lick!
Remember those sweet, lazy Summer afternoons
where you would swathe a strawberry through a tub of
sour cream and then dip it into some brown sugar?
It's innocent and lovely, like Maria & the Von Trapp kids
on a picnic.
Now imagine 'The Sound of Music' with Bettie Page
playing the governess! Ditch the strawberries for
blackberries.
Try bursting the blackberries in a pan of hot sugar,
strain the juice, add some creme fraiche and eggs.
Let it cook 'til it thickens enough to coat the back of a
wooden
paddle.
Toss it in an ice cream maker and just wait and see.
The smear n' lick naughtiness will tumble out of
your ice-cream maker and do the walk of shame to the
freezer.

Blackberry & Chevre Salad with Crispy Pancetta
and a truly naughty vinaigrette!
There was a bar behind the Htel de Ville in Paris
where we would gather to drink red wine and devour a
salad of sweet mache, tangy chevre and hot, plump
little lardons of bacon.
Whenever I use those three ingredients, I am back
sitting by the Seine and listening to Edith Piaf.
This tangy blackberry vinaigrette is a perfect addition to
these sensational ingredients.

Blackberry Molasses Cake
it's a Rizzo moment
Remember when Rizzo breaks your heart
singing, 'There are Worse Things I Can Do'?
The high school tramp shows her redemptive side.
That's this cake.
Flirty blackberries and blushing peaches embrace the
wholesome, nostalgic flavours of Fall.

Very Berry Buttermilk & Brown Sugar Cake
under a cloak of cream cheese frosting
Ava Gardner playing peek-a-boo under Veronica
Lake's hairdo.
Tangy, dark interior. Soft blonde exterior.
A cake that wants to cave under pressure.
To yield.
To offer no resistance.
What man can resist?

Blackberry Nip
When I was 8, my Aunty Marge made a trifle with
Blackberry Nip.
I ate four helpings.
My love of this berry was born.
In jams, cakes, tarts, puddings...even margaritas.
Or just freshly picked; staining fingers, lips and tongue.
Share the love
Cheers, Mannix
