Empowering Women to Change Their Lives

Dear Friend,
Tom Peters wrote a ground-breaking article for Fast Company Magazine that became a theme for the 90's - the article was called The Brand Called You.
Today, more than ever before, you need to understand the importance of developing and communicating your brand.
For many of us, self-promotion is at best, something we do when we have to---when we are looking for a job, or if we are an entrepreneur, or in marketing, but something we really don't like to do, or even think is necessary when we are employed.
You might think that your results should just speak for themselves---finishing a project on time and on budget; negotiating a great new alliance; bringing in new business that exceeds goals, etc.
But here's the thing, it's great that you were successful but, if you don't share the information or the results---most people simply are too busy to notice or care.
In order to be seen, you have to be heard. Your results do not speak for themselves. It's your job to speak for them. You have to be a self-promoter, in other words a self-presenter.
It's summer vacation and I'm giving you a reading assignment. I've excerpted some of Tom's wise words here. Read this today, it will help you know exactly what to do to promote Brand You before it's too late. Your homework assignment is to read the full article
and his followup article called Brand You Survival Kit. You simply can't afford to wait.
Here's to your success!

Tom Peters, Fast Company Magazine, August 1987
It's a new brand world.
That cross-trainer you're wearing -- one look at the distinctive swoosh on the side tells everyone who's got you branded. That coffee travel mug you're carrying -- ah, you're a Starbucks woman! Your blue jeans with the prominent Levi's rivets, the watch with the hey-this-certifies-I-made-it icon on the face...
You're branded, branded, branded, branded.
It's time for me -- and you -- to take a lesson from the big brands, a lesson that's true for anyone who's interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper in the new world of work.
Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.
It's that simple -- and that hard. And that inescapable.
So how do you market brand You?
There's literally no limit to the ways you can go about enhancing your profile. Try moonlighting! Sign up for an extra project inside your organization, just to introduce yourself to new colleagues and showcase your skills -- or work on new ones. Or, if you can carve out the time, take on a freelance project that gets you in touch with a totally novel group of people. If you can get them singing your praises, they'll help spread the word about what a remarkable contributor you are.
If those ideas don't appeal, try teaching a class at a community college, in an adult education program, or in your own company. You get credit for continued here
