"May you live in interesting times" is said to be
a Chinese curse, in spite of the lack of evidence
to substantiate the claim.
Still, you have to admit we are living in
interesting times, which can feel like a curse.
Or not, depending on your temperament and frame
of mind.
What we need are leaders who can give us not only
a way through these interesting times, but a
reason for hope and for continued effort. What we
need are leaders who inspire us.
And we need (even if we don't have the title or
the position of leader) to be the type of leader
-- at work, in our communities, at home -- who
inspires.
I'm not asking you to act like an adolescent
cheerleader. You don't have to jump up and down
excitedly, thump your chest, and passionately
proclaim slogans from a Successories motivational
poster.
The best way to inspire people is to be yourself,
your best self, and to engage their deepest
values and most authentic emotions.
