Greetings!

I got hooked on American Idol this season. I looked forward to the performances each week and was so excited when David Cook won!

By listening to the judge's comments, I have realized that my inner critic judges every encounter I have with salespeople whether I'm on the phone or in person with them.

Company representatives make impressions on us and we tell others about them. My intent here isn't just to criticize, but to look at these interactions and see what we can learn from them--and how we can benefit.

Here's to your success!

My Inner Simon Cowell

by Dana Bristol-Smith

I'm not an easy sale. When I'm sitting across from a salesperson, I can't help it, I go into automatic evaluation mode. Like Simon's judging, the results aren't pretty.

If a salesperson comes on strong and tells me all about his product's benefits before he knows what is important to me as a prospective customer, he is going to literally push me away. And, I will run! I will remember him and probably use his example for an article or two!

See if you've had similar experiences:

The weight loss clinic
I've been impressed by my neighbor Christina's success. She looks slim and trim and is keeping her 20 pounds off! I decided to go check out the clinic that she went to.

At the clinic I'm sitting across from Natalie the counselor. I can tell that Natalie is following a script. How can I tell? Well, it's easy, Natalie is continued here

Meet Garr Reynolds

Garr Reynolds is currently Associate Professor of Management at Kansai Gaidai University where he teaches Marketing, Global Marketing and Multimedia Presentation Design. Garr can often be found presenting on subjects concerning design, branding, and effective corporate communications.

Garr has written the book Presentation Zen . I love Seth Godin's comment on Amazon about Garr's book: "Please don't buy this book! Once people start making better presentations, mine won't look so good. (But if you truly want to learn what works and how to do it right, Garr is the man to learn from.)"

Garr gives great tips at his website on Preparation and Organizing Presentations. We can all learn a lot from him!
