Greetings!

Spring is here and it's the time for growth. What are you doing to keep learning and growing? I'm reminded by the beautiful blooms everywhere that we can always try something new.

This month, I have some fun and tackle fear head on with The Big Hairy Monster article. This fear issue just doesn't want to go away. Please indulge me as I take a moment to tell you about the Resolution that we received from the City of San Diego for Speak for Success Women's Leadership Institute Day on April 1st. Lastly, I'll introduce you to a woman who uses her presentation skills as a leader in the executive search industry.

Thanks for allowing me to stay in touch with you!

All the best,

Dana Bristol-Smith

The Big Hairy Monster

Why is the fear of public speaking such a big hairy monster? Why are we so terrified of being seen and heard?

At least 50% of the people who attend Speak for Success workshops cite managing fear and anxiety their number one reason for taking the class.

How does fear serve us?

Fear helps us by keeping us alert to physical dangers--but at the same time, when there really isn't imminent danger, it holds us back from expressing ourselves fully.

It takes courage to stand at the front of the room and give a presentation. We can't hide when we are out in front. Eleanor Roosevelt knew what she was talking about when she said:

"You gain strength, courage and confidence in every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing that you think you cannot do."

What has fear held you back from doing?

I'm reminded of a scene in the movie continued here

City of San Diego Honors Speak for Success Women's Leadership Institute

April 1, 2008 was Speak for Success Women's Leadership Institute Day in the City of San Diego.

We were honored by the City Council for our work with women who are survivors of domestic violence. On hand at City Council were our graduates Anna Seymore, who spoke, Cynthia Jackson, and instructors Dr. Deborah Waitley (pictured with me) and Helice Bridges.

Thank you to Council President Pro Tem, Jim Madaffer and Aimee Faucett for our Resolution! If you'd like to see the video of us receiving the Resolution go to the City Council Website and click on April 1, 2008 Video, then go to ITEM-32: Speak for Success Women's Leadership Institute Day on the menu.

In the Spotlight: Amy St. Clair Day

Vice President, Learning and Performance at Morgan Samuels Company

Dana: Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your views on the importance of Presentation Skills. Why are presentation skills important in your industry and company?

Amy: Presentation skills are critical to winning business with new and existing clients. Also, once we secure the business presentation skills are critical to presenting a candidate to our client effectively. If the presenter's style gets in the way it reflects poorly not only on us as a company but also on the candidates we are trying to place.

Dana: What are the top challenges that people in your organization have when it comes to giving an effective business presentation?

Amy: Not understanding the audience and what they need, focusing more on the "sell" than on cues from the company as to what they want or need, and dancing in the moment based on what comes up during a presentation. I see a lot of people stick strictly to their notes and miss an opportunity to engage the audience in something valuable that has emerged.

Dana: What advice do you have for people who give business presentations?

Amy: Be authentic! It is important to identify and cultivate your strengths as a public speaker rather than trying to imitate someone else you admire only to have it come across as fake. Also, practice, practice, practice! The best of us practice what we are going to say to ensure we are comfortable and have our key points outlined.

Dana: Thanks very much for sharing some great advice.
