Welcome to your first issue of Alive Tree Care News!  Our goal is to use this format to educate homeowners regarding the care of their trees and keep you abreast of current tree issues affecting central Illinois.  Tree issues such as insect problems and any diseases we may be encountering in the fields will be discussed along with what problems we may be looking for in the coming weeks.   With this newsletter you will have the latest information regarding the care of your valuable trees.
bradfordpearmorton Think Spring!
Spring is a very busy time at Alive Tree Care.  At Alive Tree Care we are currently applying 12-month insecticide for a variety of pests including Japanese Beetles, Emerald Ash Borer and Bronze Birch Borer among other insects.  Applying a 12-month systemic insecticide can help reduce the insect pressure in the summer months and keep your trees looking beautiful.  Spring is also an excellent time to apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer to trees and shrubs.  Spring time fertilizer will insure that your trees have sufficient nutrients and minerals for the year ahead.  Spring is also an excellent time to treat certain trees diseases such as scale infestations,  Rhizosphaera Needlecast, Applescab, iron and manganese chlorosis.  Call Alive Tree Care today for springtime applications of insecticide, fertilization or spraying.
Oak Wilt Advisory
Stop pruning Oaks! Oak Wilt is a fatal soil born fungal disease that affects oak trees, with the Red Oak being the most commonly affected. To help prevent the spread of Oak Wilt, Alive Tree Care does not prune any Oak trees during the growing season.

Frequently Asked Questions

QWhat is Emerald Ash Borer?

A:  Emerald Ash Borer is metallic green beetle that is believed to have been brought into the Great Lakes area through shipping pallets.  In 2002 the beetles were discoved in southern Michigan.  Since 2002 Emerald Ash Borer has killed tens of millions of Ash trees.  Since the discovery of the beetle in northern Illinois in 2006, the beetle has slowly made its way down the state with it being discovered on the Illinois State Campus in the summer of 2011.

Tree Care Tips for April:
  • Stop Pruning Oaks and Elms
  • Remove and dispose of any old leaves or needles (especially if you have had a fungal disease such as Applescab)
  • If adding mulch around trees, avoid volcano mulching and over mulching trees .  Mulch should only be 2-4 inches deep and should not touch the trunk
