CCC Awarded $1 Million
Workforce Grant
A 30-member consortium of State University of New York community colleges received a $14.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to design, implement, and deliver a strategic approach to job training and education for high-need industries. Corning Community College's portion of the grant, $1,014,530, will provide non-credit welding training in the Southern Tier. While the grant provides CCC with the funding needed for essential equipment and supplies, the College will be looking to secure additional funding for a facility in which to house the program.
Once a facility is secured, CCC anticipates training 300 Trade Adjustment Assistance eligible workers over a three-year period. Local corporate workforce partners have expressed an interest in this welding program including Hardinge Inc. and Hilliard Corporation.
Through the Training and Education in Advanced Manufacturing (T.E.A.M.) Educational Pathways Project, the community college collaborative will provide more than 3,000 of New York's Trade Adjustment Assistance eligible workers and unemployed veterans with the training and education required to find high-quality, high-wage jobs within the advanced manufacturing industry sector.
With access to educational pathways aligned with advanced manufacturing industrial career pathways and third-party certifications, the T.E.A.M. Educational Pathways Project will support credential and degree attainment for participants in two years or less. A statewide process for designing and offering training and education programs will be developed with the intent to replicate the T.E.A.M. model across all community colleges and all academic programs in the applied and occupational sciences, and all industry sectors as part of project sustainability.

In 2010, Professor McNett was the recipient of the CCC's Regional Board of Trustee's Award for Excellence in Teaching. "The really great thing about getting a degree in I.T. is that you can work in just about any industry," states Professor McNett. "Every place of business has computers. It's also interesting work because the field is constantly changing." | |

"Alicia McNett, who was my advisor and teacher, helped me with so much, especially my last semester. She helped me figure out what avenues I wanted to take when I graduated and helped find possibilities of work for me. I'm actually the first person in my immediate family to graduate with a degree. I'm really excited and my family is really proud. I'm proud of myself for completing my degree."

Borrow:
The American Way of Debt
CCC's Walter R. Smith Visiting Scholar Series will host Dr. Louis Hyman on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 8 p.m. in the Triangle Lounge, Commons Building, Spencer Hill campus, Corning, NY, as he presents, Borrow: The American Way of Debt.
Dr. Hyman, assistant professor in the Labor Relations, Law, and History Department at Cornell University's ILR School, will discuss how the rise of consumer borrowing in the 1920s, just before the Great Depression, altered our culture and economy. He will also discuss New York's role as a center of this financial innovation, which allowed lending to grow more and more profitable, but in turn, displaced funds available for business borrowing - a reconfiguration that set our economy on an unsustainable course. Dr. Hyman will provide a historical perspective on the temptation to live beyond one's means; and offer suggestions for a stable, prosperous credit market in the future. Event is free and open to the public.
For additional information, please contact Debbie Stayer Kelly '91 at (607) 936-5537 or email dstayerk@corning-cc.edu.
