News from the Director of AdmissionsTop1
Greetings!

Would you, or someone you know, like a FREE associate's degree while playing an important role in the safety of your community? We are pleased to share an exciting opportunity for volunteer firefighters choosing to pursue an associate's degree. The Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) launched its Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP) for community college tuition reimbursement to eligible volunteer firefighters.a

According to FASNY, this historic initiative is designed for a student/volunteer firefighter who hasn't already achieved an associate's degree or higher to be eligible to have up to 100% of his/her tuition reimbursed in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements as a member in good standing in one of New York's volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP student/volunteer firefighter can pursue on a full- or part-time basis.

FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student/volunteers must maintain acceptable volunteer activity and training levels during and for a period after their entire course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence.

The deadline for volunteer firefighters to apply for tuition reimbursement for the fall 2011 semester is October 1st and the spring 2012 is February 1st. FASNY's goal is to attract and maintain 15,189 new firefighters over the next four years.

For those interested in applying for FASNY HELP, email HELP@FASNY.com or call (855)367-6933. The FASNY HELP Handbook which includes all necessary forms is online at www.fasny.com.

Spotlight on the President
In the August 2012 issue of Mountain Home, journalist Cindy Davis Meixel, shares her afternoon kayaking adventure with Dr. Katherine Douglas, president, in an article titled, Outdoor Adventure 101. b
........

"It'd been raining through the night and the morning's forecast was calling for scattered thunderstorms. I was scheduled to pick up the president of Corning Community College (CCC) at 9 a.m. and take her kayaking. My sleep was restless.

I'd never met Dr. Katherine "Kate" Douglas before, but had heard reports that she was personable, positive, and energized. I was hoping the admirable adjectives held true and the weather report didn't."

Dr. Marian Eberly d

Our College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Marian Eberly, vice president and Dean of Academic Affairs, who joined us on August 20, 2012.

"Dr. Eberly brings to Corning Community College a wealth of experience in the classroom and administration, a strong commitment to the mission of the community college, and a devotion to the success of each student," states Dr. Katherine Douglas, president. "In her most recent assignment as dean of Liberal Arts, Social Science and Education at Sussex County Community College (SCCC), Dr. Eberly's efforts were instrumental in creating a fully online Liberal Arts degree program; collaborating to establish a College Ready Consortium with Sussex County high schools; and piloting developmental English projects to increase student success. I am excited Dr. Eberly has joined CCC. We look forward to her bringing professionalism, energy and enthusiasm to our campus. We look forward to working with her to further our vision and mission."

Prior to SCCC, Dr. Eberly was assistant dean for Academic Foundations at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC). During her tenure at RVCC, Dr. Eberly established a comprehensive Academic Support Center, transformed a Testing Center, introduced portfolio assessment to English and ESOL, and directed a major Title Ill grant focusing on Developmental Education and student support services.

She has an Ed.D. from Rutgers University, a master's degree in Applied English from Michigan State University, and a bachelor's degree in Modern Language Education from Eastern Mennonite College. Dr. Eberly has also pursued post-doctoral studies in developmental education and higher education leadership.

Dr. Eberly can be contacted at (607) 962-9231 or meberly@corning-cc.edu.

e Auto Body Program
This program is for students wanting to pursue careers in auto body and collision management, teaching vocational education or working with automotive engineering. Although this program is designed for immediate placement into a career, many students will transfer to another institution to further their education. Students must take English, math, physics, psychology, sociology and chemistry as well as select auto body courses.

Career opportunities for program graduates are vocational education, collision technicians, body shop managers and owners. This industry
needs manufacturing supervisors, foremen, and team leaders. This course of study can fill these needs because students will be able to analyze, estimate and communicate necessary repairs. They will also know how to develop business, safety and shop operation plans as well as being able to weld, assemble, and spray any product. Students will also be trained in handling various toxic and highly flammable materials, making them a great safety asset in industry.

f Commit to Complete

CCC students "Commit to Complete"

Statistics show the surest way for anyone to land a job in their chosen field is to finish college and earn a degree or certificate. And that's exactly what our students are promising to do on October 3 by signing a mass pledge to complete their degrees and certifications before transferring or entering the job market.

Students will gather to sign the completion pledge, part of a national community college movement. The event is being hosted by the CCC's Phi Theta Kappa chapter. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society members are serving as the student arm of The Community College Completion Corps, a national education initiative.

In April 2010 leaders of six national organizations representing the nation's 1,200 community colleges signed The Call to Action, a pledge to increase student completion rates by 50 percent over the next decade. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society was the only student organization asked to participate.

President Obama has called for community colleges to produce an additional 5 million degrees and certificates in the next 10 years, part of his goal to restore the United States as the world's leader in college graduates.

Please support our students as they commit to complete. Click here to learn more about this important initiative.

Chris Blackwell Meet Chris Blackwell... h

Chris Blackwell, associate professor of Automotive Technology, earned a B.F.A. in Ceramic, Glass and Industrial Design from Alfred University, and an A.S. in Liberal Arts & Sciences: Math & Sciences from Corning Community College. He holds a New York State Permanent Teaching Certificate in Auto Body and Auto Service, and EPA: Area Source Rule-Painter Training Certification. In addition to being a New York State Auto Safety Inspector, Chris is designated as an American Service Excellence: Master Collision Repair and Refinish Tech, Under Car Specialist, Platinum Non-Structural Tech, Platinum Auto Physical Damage Appraiser, Platinum Refinishing Tech, PPG: Seventh-level Master Painter/Refinisher (water-based and solvent-based paints), and Gold Certified Custom Painter. He serves as local board chair of I-Car, founding member of Chemung Valley Street Rods, and member of National Street Rod Association.

"There's a lot of chemistry and art in auto body," stated Chris. "Chemistry comes in with mixing paint, fillers, and adhesives. We work with everything from aluminum to fiberglass to steel to carbon fiber and you have to be an expert in all of them. Auto body is also really close to sculpture because you're re-shaping the car. You have to have an artist's eye to be able to return something to its original state. With the custom fabrication of parts, you become a metal worker--almost like a blacksmith. Auto Body is also like painting because you have to know how to look at color and make sure the color on the car matches as well as have the ability to custom paint. There are very few places where can you get those skills."

Chris can be reached at (607) 936-7321 or via email at blackwell@corning-cc.edu
