Kate Danforth, professor of Mathematics, joined Corning Community College in 1978. Since that time, she has been recognized on numerous occasions over the past 34 years for demonstrating excellence in teaching and professional service. In addition to Professor Danforth's role at CCC, she serves in a variety of capacities with New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) and American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC.) Accolades include the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) Teaching Excellence Award in 2009, State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service in 2004, and SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004.

Realizing at a young age that mathematics was a permanent fixture in her future career path, Professor Danforth earned a master's degree in Mathematics from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from SUNY Oswego. From that point forward, her passion for mathematics was shared with others pursuing an education.

"I received an email from a student who started in my pre-algebra class and was terrified of math," states Professor Danforth. "She told me that she is now teaching math, and said 'I wouldn't be if it weren't for you.' There are a lot more opportunities in math than people realize. Some people think that all you can do is teach, but mathematicians make good computer programmers and engineers and statisticians. Teaching is also very rewarding for lots of reasons.  When the student light bulb goes on and all of a sudden it clicks, you wait for that moment when you see the 'aha .' Helping people... that's why I teach."
