SOME OF THE BEST SMALL TOWNS FOR BUSINESS ARE IN MISSISSIPPI    


True South Jack Shultz, the author of "Boomtown, USA" has named Mississippi home to three of the best small towns for business. The Mississippi towns highlighted include Columbus, Oxford and Tupelo. Schultz notes the Columbus Air Force Base creates one-third of the nation's pilots and in Oxford, the literary capital of the south, they have seen a population growth of 36 percent in the last 10 years. In addition, Tupelo, the home of Elvis Presley, remains a $46 million tourism and hospitality industry. Many urbanites are moving to smaller towns and many rural communities have been able to retain a growing population because location is not as important as it used to be. MEET THE FACULTY: CHAD MILLER  


Assistant Professor Chad R. Miller is Graduate Coordinator of the Master of Science of Economic Development program. Since joining USM in 2007, he has helped establish the Center for Logistics, Trade, and Transportation, which is now an official U.S. Department of Transportation research center that helps promote economic development through improved freight transportation. He teaches economic development organization management, international development, and coordinates the True South course. GRADUATE STUDENTS DISCUSS POST-DISASTER REDEVELOPMENT   


John Hubbard and D.E. "Sam" Leiva (pictured L to R), both graduate students in the Master of Science in Economic Development program, led a discussion on post-disaster redevelopment at the 2012 Economic Development Summit held last month in Balch Springs, Texas.  Hubbard, who is Balch Spring's director of economic development corporation, invited Leiva to attend, "The Role of Local Elected and Appointed Officials in Economic Development When Disaster Strikes," to serve as a moderator and discuss his research on the controversial economic redevelopment approach used by Greensburg, Kansas...LEARN MORE
