MISSISSIPPI'S INTERNATIONAL EXPORTS UP 30 PERCENT

Statistics on international trading reveal Mississippi is moving up on the amount of products being exported to other countries. Jerry Hingle, executive director of the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA), said Mississippi exports were up 30 percent during the first four months of 2012. He is hoping to bolster that number by providing assistance to small businesses that may not have the resources to do so on their own. SUSTA is a non-profit organization that provides programming and funding to help small businesses that produce high-value food and agricultural products expand their businesses through exporting. ALTERNATE AFGHAN SUPPLY ROUTE TAB: $2.1 BILLION

Pakistan's refusal to let NATO access its ports and roads into Afghanistan has cost the Defense Department more than $2.1 billion in extra transportation costs to move supplies and equipment in and out of the country. The stunning revelation of the exorbitant cost comes as the Pentagon continues to negotiate with Islamabad to regain access to the supply routes. "The good news is that there continue to be those discussions," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Friday during a briefing at the Pentagon. "There still are some tough issues to try to resolve but, you know, I think the important thing right now is that both sides in good faith keep working to see if we can resolve this." Pakistan closed the ground route to NATO supplies after a U.S. airstrike mistakenly killed 24 of its soldiers last November. The only other access to land-locked Afghanistan is through the Northern Distribution Network, a series of roads through Russia and Central Asia. LEARN MORE

CLTT PARTNER IN CFIRE CONSORTIUM FUNDED BY USDOT

The National Center for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education (CFIRE) is a Tier 1 University
Transportation Center (UTC) funded by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA). The CFIRE consortium is structured as a unique collaborative framework: northern and southern hubs. Both hubs help coordinate education, training, and technology transfer efforts. Research is done collaboratively across both regions, but dissemination of research results is managed by the hub institutions. The southern hub is led by the University of Memphis and includes Vanderbilt University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
