REPORT EXAMINES U.S. MANUFACTURING CHARACTERISTICS BY MSA 


A new Brookings Report, Locating American Manufacturing: Trends in the Geography of Production provides a comprehensive analysis of the metropolitan geography of U.S. manufacturing. The website also has an interactive map for examining industry specialties, wages, plant size, job changes, urban location, and basic geography by MSA. The report finds that U.S. metropolitan areas have become increasingly specialized in manufacturing since 1980, but vary widely in their manufacturing activities and focuses. Manufacturing wages also vary widely.The average manufacturing plant in Mississippi is larger than the national average of 40 workers, with an average of 75 jobs in Hattiesburg and over 100 jobs on the coast... HATTIESBURG CORRIDORS RETAIL MARKET ANALYSIS CAPSTONE     


All the students in the Masters of Science in Economic Development Program must do a thesis or a capstone project to complete their degree. The latter involves a "real world" economic development related research project for an actual community. This summer students are doing a number of capstone projects, but the largest is a Retail Market Analysis study, which is designed to assist the Urban Planning Department of the City of Hattiesburg, Director Pattie Brantley, and Orion Planning Group, Principal Bob Barber, in implementing strategies to meet the goals of Full Steam Ahead, the Land Development Code Update for the City of Hattiesburg's 2010 All Aboard Comprehensive Plan... WILCOX RECEIVES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AWARD     


James Wilcox, director of the University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Economic and Entrepreneurship Education, is the recipient of the Community Development Society 2012 Donald W. Littrell New Professional Award. This award is presented annually to a Community Development Society member in recognition of a superior contribution to the field of community development and the Society. Recipients of the New Professional Award must have worked fewer than 10 years in the field of community development, have been a member of CDS for at least three years, and have participated in at least one annual CDS meeting. Wilcox currently serves the Community Development Society as a member of the Board of Directors and as co-chair of the International Committee.... LEARN MORE
