ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COURSE HELPS ELECTED OFFICIALS  


Over 60 elected officials from practically every corner of Mississippi were on hand for the "Basic Community Economic Development" course held April 24 at the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship at Southern Miss. The introductory course emphasized elected officials' role in community and economic development. The participants included Mississippi mayors, aldermen and alderwomen, financial officers and other city/county government officials. Partners that joined the Trent Lott National Center in making the event possible included the Mississippi Municipal League; Mississippi Association of Supervisors; Mississippi Manufacturers Association; Gulf Coast Business Council; Mississippi Economic Council and the Mississippi Main Street Association.

RETHINKING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT 


One of the causes of the current high levels of unemployment is a skills mismatch between employers and potential employees.  This is especially true in Mississippi, which has one of the highest rates of skills mismatch according to a recent study by the International Monetary Fund.  These concerns, along with some innovative examples of potential solutions to the problem are detailed in the Fed Issue section of the most recent EconSouth publication by the Atlanta Fed. The article is written by Todd Greene, vice president in the Atlanta Fed's community and economic development group.  Todd was a featured speaker at last year's IMPACT SOUTHERN MISS forum held at the Trent Lott National Center.  LEARN MORE 

WOLF HONORED AS BOARDMAN ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR   


Sheldon Wolf, founder and CEO of Spellex Corp., credits perseverance and high-caliber employees for the business success he has achieved over the past quarter-century. What began as a budding idea at the kitchen table of his one-bedroom apartment in 1988 has blossomed into a leading provider worldwide of specialized dictionary enhancement software solutions for the healthcare, legal and scientific communities. On Thursday, April 19, Wolf was honored by the College of Business at The University of Southern Mississippi as its 2012 Boardman Entrepreneur of the Year during a special ceremony at the Great Southern Club in Gulfport, Miss. He is a 1972 graduate of Southern Miss with a bachelor's degree in music education. LEARN MORE
