CRUMPTON SELECTED FOR 2012 LEADERSHIP PINEBELT CLASS    


Alison Crumpton, Marketing Coordinator for the Trent Lott National Center, was recently selected to participate in the 2012 Area Development Partnership Leadership Pinebelt Class. The class cultivates emerging community leaders who dedicate themselves to the betterment of the greater Hattiesburg area of Forrest, Lamar and Perry counties. Class sessions will focus on enhancing leadership skills and garnering a better understanding of the position of health care, cultural arts, economic development, military and industry; the region's essential assets. Over the next eight months, class participants will also design and implement group projects that address a local need/opportunity. LEARN MORE 

CHOOSING THE UNITED STATES - HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW    


Improving the competitiveness of the U.S. as a business location is often seen simply as a job of the  government. Though they are major factors in such decisions, economic developers cannot rely solely on the government to create an adequate business environment in order to win location decisions;  this is a collaborative effort of economic developers,  government officials, and private industry.  Communities must lead the way through community development, capitalizing on changes in the U.S.  and global economies, and increasing focus on "near-shoring" verses offshoring.  This article has very relevant information on ways to improve U.S. business location strategies from both business and governmental levels.  Though this focusing on the nation as a whole, these strategies can very well be considered and implemented on the state and local levels. JOHNSON RECEIVES MARKETING LEADERSHIP AWARD


Lee Johnson, an economic development master's student, recently received the 2011-2012 David E. Ford Marketing Leadership Award from the College of Business. This award was presented at the College of Business Honors Banquet on April 4 by Mr. David. E Ford, formerly from Mississippi Power, and Dr. Bill Smith, marketing professor at Southern Miss.  This award is presented to business marketing students that excel in the classroom, community, and campus during their undergraduate career.
