MISSISSIPPI CITED FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITY    


The Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity is an indicator of new business creation in the United States. Capturing new business owners in their first month of significant business activity, this measure provides documentation of new business development across the country. Based on this scale, Mississippi had an entrepreneurial index score of 0.26% on a scale of 0.15% (West Virginia) to 0.52% (Arizona). The states experiencing the largest increases in entrepreneurial activity rates over the past decade were Nevada (0.23 percentage points), Georgia (0.18 percentage points), Massachusetts (0.16 percentage points) and Tennessee (0.15). States that experienced the largest decreases in entrepreneurial activity rates were Wyoming (-0.17 percentage points) and New Mexico (-0.13). LEARN MORE 

LOCKHEED MARTIN MISS. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DAY MARCH 30 


The University of Southern Mississippi College of Science and Technology is busy preparing for the upcoming Lockheed Martin annual Information Technology (IT) Day at the Jackson Convention Complex March 30. The daylong event is designed to increase IT education and awareness, as well as to encourage networking and collaboration in industry, academia and the community. More than 800 area high school and college students will participate in the IT Day program, as well as compete in sponsored quiz bowl challenges designed to increase the students' knowledge and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects. WEB CONFERENCING HELPS TEACH INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT     


Dr. Omid Parhizkar, from the World Bank's Global Environment Facility (GEF), spoke to a recent ED 748 International Development: Globalization & Economic Development class on international business development using WIMBA live classroom. The Master of Science in Economic Development Program is taught in an innovative hybrid in-person/on-line format.  The on-line evening classes are taught using web conferencing technology that allows guest lecturers from all over the world to interactively talk to students in the program. The WIMBA classroom allowed Omid to speak to the class from the World Bank in Washington DC on the GEF, which  is a multilateral financial mechanism that provides sustainable development funds to recipient countries.
