SOUTHERN MISS PARTICIPATES AT MEDC CONFERENCE

Southern Miss, along with other leaders from Mississippi's research universities including Jackson State University, Mississippi State University and the University of Mississippi, discussed resources they have to offer for economic and community development at the MEDC Conference on Feb. 1 in Jackson, Miss. Representatives from Southern Miss included the Mississippi Polymer Institute  (MPI) and the Trent Lott National Center/Master of Science in Economic Development Program. SOUTHERN MISS - ONE OF NATION'S MOST POPULAR UNIVERSITIES 


The University of Southern Mississippi outranks all other state universities in popularity, according to a recent analysis conducted by U.S. News & World Report. The report notes that of the best indicators of a school's popularity among students is the school's yield -- the percentage of applicants accepted by a college who end up enrolling at that institution in the fall. The figures represented in the rankings are from the fall 2010 entering class and show the students that were accepted, the students that enrolled, and the admit yield. LEARN MORE

NEARLY EVERY US METRO AREA IS POORER THAN IN 2000  


The opening decade of the 21st century was the first census decade on record in which real median household income declined, a Brookings Institution analysis reveals. "Nearly all (91) of the 100 largest metro areas ended the decade with lower median incomes than in 2000," Brookings reported in a compilation of the five most important findings to emerge from its State of Metropolitan America analyses over the past year. Among the results are these:
Sun Belt areas on the front lines of the housing market collapse (Orlando, Las Vegas, Riverside), manufacturing metros (Indianapolis, Cleveland), and many parts of the Southeast (Birmingham, Nashville) ranked among the places experiencing large poverty increases. LEARN MORE

The Student Economic Development Association has reserved the Right Field Roost at Pete
