SARDER SELECTED FOR RESEARCH AWARDSarder Award

Recipients have been chosen for the 2011 Butch Oustalet Gulf Coast Outstanding Faculty Awards in the areas of service, teaching and research at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The Research Award was presented to Dr. MD Sarder, assistant professor of industrial engineering technology. Over the past year, Sarder had multiple grants funded, including one for more than $140,000 through the Mississippi Department of Transportation. He also published two peer reviewed journal articles and four conference proceedings.

The Port of Gulfport has direct access to Hwy 49 and it is only 10 minutes from Interstate 10. For this reason trucks can easily distribute products to 75% of the U.S. market within 24 hours. As shown in the Figure below the destinations of imports through Gulfport extend to many states.

TRANSPORTATION AND WAREHOUSING JOB GROWTH IN MISS.

BluePrint Mississippi 2011, the state's economic revitalization plan, has identified the transportation and warehousing sector as a key industry cluster for the state. According to EMSI data, overall state employment in transportation and warehousing (NAICS 48-49) has increased by 3% in the last ten years to 56,552 while nationally employment in this sector decreased by 3%. These numbers are all down from pre-recession growth rates (see chart).
