Child Safety & Protection: A response to the Sandusky Case
Virginia Mentoring Partnership would like to express our sadness to those affected by the child abuse scandal reported late last year at Penn State. As a leader of mentoring in Virginia, VMP promotes and provides guidance on best practices for mentoring and youth-serving organizations that help them manage the risks and prevent such crimes against children.
VMP reminds programs in our network of the importance of screening, but also of training for staff, parents, and mentors on how to recognize and report child abuse. We want to remind you of resources such as SAFE (Screening Applicants for Effectiveness): Guidelines to Prevent Child Molestation in Mentoring and Youth-Serving Organizations, published by Friends For Youth, Inc. and trainings. On January 12, Friends for Youth is offering a free webinar on strengthening youth safety in mentoring programs. Register here. On February 13, SCAN will offer training on how to recognize and report child abuse. Learn more and register here.
Together we can prevent abuses like those perpetrated on the young men in the Sandusky case and also prevent the second offence, the culture of silence surrounding and protecting those who abuse. Thank you for all the steps you take to protect children in your programs.
