Greetings!

By all appearances, summer is here - it's hot! It's interesting how much traveling volunteers do over the summer - and how neighbors tend to stay home.

This year is no exception. We had been welcoming 8-10 new neighbors per week; last time we checked, there were 20 in one week! Last year, we had one volunteer working our front desk; this year, we need two.

We appreciate each one of you and the service you provide, and we know we're all stretching to make it happen for our neighbors.

Lunch!

About a hundred of us joined for lunch last month to celebrate our service.

Check out the blog post about the event and "kewl" slide show. It was great being together and sharing our stories.

Let's do it again real soon!

Service Request Desk Team

Phone ringing off hookIf you like excitement, you may want to consider joining the SRD Team. If you like A LOT of excitement, may we suggest Monday morning?

On each four-hour shift, volunteers field incoming phone calls of every sort and, between interruptions, fill neighbors' service requests. Filling service requests is part science - computer science - and part art - the art of persuasion. Training is provided.

We know when you've accepted a service request because a feeling of accomplishment fills the room. We would ring a bell if we had one. One of our SRD volunteers has been working the front desk every Friday for eighteen years - she loves it!

Increasingly, we need two and sometimes three volunteers for each shift, which is one reason we're looking for new volunteers. The good news is that when a team of volunteers is actively working the desk there's a sense of camaraderie and spirit of fun that makes the experience even more rewarding.

New Neighbor Interview Team

New Neighbor InterviewWhen we're approached by a prospective neighbor or one is referred to us by a friend, family member, or caregiver, we take a bit of information over the phone and then assign a volunteer to visit the neighbor in their home. There are several purposes for this visit: to establish a relationship, to learn more about the neighbor and have them learn about VVCC, to open the door to making needed referrals, and, to take the neighbor's initial service request.

Nurses and social workers seem drawn to serving on this team, but they're not the only ones. In coming days, we'll be deepening this interview, expanding our ability to make referrals, and scheduling follow-up visits to make sure our new neighbors are remaining independent and getting the help they need. We'd love to have you join us. Training is provided.

Volunteer Recruiting

Volunteer RecruitingIn order to meet the growing needs of our neighbors, we're beginning to ramp up our recruiting efforts - and we need your help.

We're paying more attention to tracking potential volunteers so we make sure they're personally invited to our weekly orientations. And, we're improving the way we do volunteer intake.

We welcome your ideas, your support, and your referrals! When you find yourself in conversation about your service with VVCC, look for an opening to suggest that your listener may want to serve too.

We've recently reworked our volunteer brochure and printed "We Love Volunteer" business cards to make it easy for all of us to recruit - just stop by the office or call/email your request and we'll mail them to you. It's also easy to invite volunteer prospects to our weekly orientations every Thursday at 10a at the office - or just send them to the website to learn more.

When we get a lead, we'll do our best to follow up.

Communication

It's interesting how, when you say "Sometime after 1:00," our neighbor only hears "1:00." That often means they'll be waiting and you'll be "late" at 12:59. When they have only one thing going on today - or this week - things look different to our neighbors.

When you're not there by 1:10, we receive a call at the office. Most of the time they're worried about you.

The moral of the story is to be precise when you can, and when you can't, please make that extra call at 12:45 to let them know you'll be there. They'll appreciate it!

Did You Notice?

Click here to visit our website...On the right sidebar of the VVCC website you'll see a group of colorful hands and bold "Volunteer Opportunities Available." Try clicking there and see what happens!

Here's a hint: all available service requests are posted each morning so viewers can see - and choose - exactly what they'd like to do. If you see anything that interests you, just call in and claim it!

Also on the sidebar, you'll notice a list of recent posts. Try checking "Grant Received" for an interesting photo of Kent.

Finally, if you're a Service Request Desk Volunteer, check the new schedule calendar link.

If you've been in Arizona for awhile, you've probably heard often that everything slows down or stops for the summer - that nothing gets done. Not around here!

Sincerely,

Kent Ellsworth, Executive Director
