We've been so busy the last couple of months, we haven't taken the time to keep everyone informed. Shame on us!
We'll try to catch you up on some major milestones for HTAP and we want to tell you about the many events that are coming up.

Update on Theresa Flores and Edison events.

Special thanks to Theresa Flores for the wonderful presentations she gave to us in January and congratulations on the success of her SOAP project and her appearance on "America's Most Wanted".

Reading

Recommendation

I don't usually recommend fiction that focuses on human trafficking, but I enjoyed "A Walk Across the Sun" by Corbin Addison. It is well written and the main characters are well-developed. Yes, there were flaws in the plot and while it focuses on two Indian sisters, it adds an American girl who is trafficked as well almost as an afterthought. That said, it was good read and it did show how natural disasters play a role in trafficking.

 What's Happening in Our Community?

We are thrilled to announce that we have opened a new office in Ft. Myers, FL. We were given a one year lease on space which we can now use to host meetings of the SW Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking and to meet with community leaders and organizers who want to learn more about our programs. We also hope to conduct small trainings for our volunteers and for those who want to conduct ARTREACH programs.

We see this as a real opportunity to expand our services and extend our reach, thanks to the generosity of our donor.

Here's a Recap of our January/February Events:

Theresa Flores at Edison State College

Three January events held at Edison State College were a great success. They were joint efforts by the college, student clubs, Zonta Clubs, HTAP and the SWFL Coalition Against Human Trafficking. Held over three weeks and starting with a movie about  labor exploitation in Immokalee, followed by a wonderful presentation by Theresa Flores (see above). Theresa spoke at 5 events in SW FLorida while she was here. The third event was  a panel discussion on the current status of anti-human trafficking efforts in SW Florida with representatives from the US Attorney's Office, Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Co-Chairs of the SWFL Coalition Against Human Trafficking and a representative from the FL Department of Children and Family. Local organizations and advocates displayed their work and talked to possible volunteers. These events covered all the bases: labor and sex trafficking and community action and advocacy. What especially made us feel good about the work being done in SW Florida is that the audiences increased in size for each event.

The SWFL Coalition is planning another event on April 24. More information to follow.

February and March have been filled with many other SW Florida events and we now look forward to events in the Tampa area (see below) and Marathon, FL; Hamilton, Ontario; and Troy, Alabama through May.

And Look What's Happening Next!

RAchel Lloyd

Rachel is a real hero in the fight against human trafficking and the exploitation and trafficking of young girls in the sex trade. Here is a link to a recent interview with Rachel Lloyd:

And here's a training I'm really

excited about!

After listening to Theresa and Rachel discuss domestic minor sex trafficking at events or on the many television shows or in their books, you may be wondering how we can prevent more girls from getting entrapped. We believe our ARTREACH program can help reach girls early and encourage them to tell their peers about the dangers.

One goal of our ARTREACH program is to train other community leaders and human trafficking advocates on how to conduct the program. While I have done short trainings on ARTREACH before, this will be the first full Train the Trainer and Simulation of the variations of ARTREACH programs. June Wallace has organized this event and we look forward to an exciting time on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27 and 28, 2012 in Sun City Center, FL. There is no charge for this training and you can preregister by clicking below.

Statement by the President on the Meeting of the Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons

Excerpts from the Presidential Statement.

...Slavery remains the affront to human dignity and stain on our collective conscience that it has always been. That is why members of my cabinet and senior advisors gathered at the White House today, at a meeting chaired by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to lay out their plans for meeting this challenge. The United States is committed to eradicating trafficking in persons, and we will draw on tools ranging from law enforcement and victim service provision, to public awareness building and diplomatic pressure. Because we know that government efforts are not enough, we are also increasing our partnerships with a broad coalition of local communities, faith-based and non-governmental organizations, schools, and businesses.

To bring all these elements together, and to be sure we are maximizing our efforts, today I am directing my cabinet to find ways to strengthen our current work, and to expand on partnerships with civil society and the private sector, so that we can bring more resources to bear in fighting this horrific injustice. In the coming weeks the White House will build on this gathering on behalf of human dignity. I am confident that we will one day end the scourge of modern slavery, because I believe in those committed to this issue: young people, people of faith and station, Americans who refuse to accept this injustice and will not rest until it is vanquished. Today, I reaffirm that the United States stands with them, and that together we will realize the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation and our country's ideal of freedom.

--- Barack Obama

Read/Recommend/Act Campaign

We believe that the more available information about human trafficking is, the more likely it is that people will learn and take action.

This campaign was inspired by one of our board members who was unable to find any books about human trafficking while traveling on business. She said, "Human Trafficking is the second largest criminal business internationally and booksellers don't carry the great books that have been written about it. We need to do something to make these books available".

  • Read these books and learn more about human trafficking.
  • Recommend these books to your local library and bookstores and encourage others to read and buy these books.
  • Act on what you've learned.

Pine Manor Poster

We have just finished another ARTREACH project with a youth soccer team in Bonita Springs, FL. Next month we will be highlighting their work.

ARTREACH banner

The banner above shows the art and artists from the
Pine Manor Association during a program we held in October and November. Pine Manor Association does an amazing job, providing students with mentoring, academic and social opportunities as well as programs like ARTREACH. They created two banners: one for the students which is displayed at the facility and

one that we display at outreach and training events.

These students chose to create art about the horrors of cocoa beans harvesting  by young slaves in the Ivory Coast and slave labor in local tomato fiields.

This banner is an outcome of a new format for ARTREACH: 90 minute programs and extended art sessions during existing afterschool programs. It has been an exciting challenge to adapt to the schedules of these students who are in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Because these afterschool classes often include boys and girls, we are focusing on information that will teach the kids how to protect themselves, but we  also look at the demand side of the issue.

We have also created a website for the ARTREACH program:

www.htapARTREACH.org which showcases the work and the participants in these programs.

If you are interested in conducting an ARTREACH program in your community, we would be glad to help you. To learn more, click here: www.htapARTREACH.org
