treatment recommendations for plantar fasciitis.  We hope you find this information helpful and informative as you strive to be a Game Changer.  For more information please contact us.

Injuries in Cycling

Due to the hard surfaces and speeds reached while cycling, injuries can fall along a very broad range from overuse injuries such as minor aches and pains to traumatic injuries involving the head and neck areas.  Of course, seek immediate medical attention for serious traumatic injuries like concussions or broken bones.

One common traumatic injury occurring during cycling  is road rash (pictured at left).  The cuts and abrasions of road rash need to be kept clean, moist and covered to heal properly.

Overuse injuries can occur by doing too much too soon. Give your body time to adapt by gradually building up your riding time and intensity.  A properly fitted bicycle optimized your riding position helping to reduce stress to certain parts of the body and preventing overuse injury.  View the common fit related injuries and their possible solutions in our article Injuries in Cycling on our website.

Painful Heel Syndrome - Plantar Fasciitis

A common cause of heel and foot pain can be related to the inflammation of the fibrous tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. This tissue, called the plantar fascia, extends from the heel to the base of each toe supporting the arch of the foot.  Plantar Fasciitis pain is typically located at the heel and bottom of the foot as shown on the image at below. It may be more intense after long periods of rest such as your first step out of bed in the morning.

Faulty bio-mechanics, tight lower leg muscles, obesity, degeneration of the plantar fascia or being on your feet too long during the day can be common causes of this syndrome.  Pain relief can
be provided through the use of NSAIDs (Ibuprofen) and ice massages using a frozen water bottle reducing the inflammation of this syndrome.  Limiting activities, stretching the plantar fascia along with the lower leg muscles, reducing body fat and wearing a night splint can help treat and prevent future injury.
