Carbs can be an Athletes' Best Friend

from Steadman Hawkins Nutrition Science Center

Carbs & performance
Good Carbs

Carbohydrates (carbs) are an important nutrient that fuels our muscles.  Athletes need to eat the appropriate amount of carbs to avoid fatigue, a heavy feeling in your muscles, and a poor overall performance.  Your carb needs will vary depending on the sport you play and the intensity of your training.  If you want to perform your best, add carb containing foods to every meal and snack ... and DO NOT skip meals!  The timing of your meal or snack can also enhance performance.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Since the brain controls all aspects of living, a brain injury can have dramatic effects on your personality, mood and cognitive abilities.  Recognition of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can take weeks or months and because it can have serious long-term effects, the sooner treatment is started the better the outcome.

Brain injuries can occur from falls, brain to skull impact, motor vehicle crash, lack of oxygen to the brain and infections such as meningitis.  When a head injury occurs, it is crucial to seek medical attention and follow instructions when returning to activity.

Prevention is the key! - follow our prevention tips, abide by the rules of your sport and use proper techniques when participating in activities.  Our TBI article provides a list of prevention tips and more information on TBI.  Click the link about to read the article.

SHCC, PROAXIS THERAPY AND CLEMSON UNIVERSITY COLLABORATE

Clemson Bioengineering LogoEarly December, Clemson University opened their state-of-the-art bioengineering lab on the  fourth-floor of Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center's Patewood Building C. The Clemson University Biomedical Engineering Innovation Campus, or CUBEInC, is a 30,000-square-foot research facility housing 10 laboratories, plus offices and conference areas. More than 100 faculty, staff and students will use the laboratories as Clemson adds another dimension to its bioengineering degree programs.

In collaboration with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas and Clemson Bioengineering labProaxis Therapy, bioengineering professor David Kwartowitz runs four fully equipped ultrasound rooms where he works with students to study, among other conditions, why people suffer rotator cuff tears.  Kwartowitz is working with eight Clemson undergraduate and graduate students to gather data on how and why patients experience the condition.
