April/2012

We explained this week might be a bit hectic. Today went as expected. We got up and took care of the dogs in the grayish Celtic weather uncommon in southern California. Drizzle just warms my soul. We woke Jack and made sure the lady with the bad case of kneezles was doing OK.

Getting Jack to school, visiting my local bagel maker, and arriving at work in time for a 6 hour meeting did not leave much time for other work duties or even playing in the market. But it was a grand day. The meeting did run a little longer than expected, and I was forced to bail first.

I had a very important engagement at 3:00. As I carefully, but quickly drove through the driving drizzle, I arrived at the venue in time to witness this amazing feat. Well it was not really feat, it was a knee. Yes I wanted to see it bend for the one of the first times since the surgery.

The stage was set there at RSM Physical Therapy, on the slab was Devin, Terminator of Fun. Standing next to her was the Patron of RSM PT Craigenstein, anxious to press and prod the incisions in her knee as he contorted her leg into various un-natural positions. It was then we could finally hear her say, "Brian, love of my life, thank you for coming to my rescue. You have done so much for me in the last three days. Leaving work early to protect me is way above and beyond the call of duty. Thank You me dearest."

Now that was what I heard. She may have said, "Hey, what are you dong here?" Anyway, I arrived in time to see Craig Legacy, PT, ATC, CSCS, AROTB and one of the Owners of Rancho Santa Margarita Physical Therapy providing the first therapy on Devin's knee. (If you are wondering what AROTB means, it is And Reader Of This Blog.) Craig and team have the best PT facility in the area, and Devin and my daughter have been patients and customers so we speak from first hand experience. I can't wait to hurt something just to go to RSM PT. (Yes Ben I know that would require some type of physical activity.)

As a result of Devin's recuperation, we have not been able to hop over to Hanna's for quite a while. I miss the gang, but we have not been going hungry. Last night, while waiting for Devin to return from an afternoon in Newport Beach, I prepared salmon filets with a citrus saffron reductions sauce accompanied by wild rice punked up with shallots, garlic, Serrano peppers, corn and a touch of red pepper for color. Then I took corn off the cob, caramelized it with butter, brown sugar, Serrano pepper and red pepper for color. Even Jack was moaning when we sat down for dinner. It turned out spectacular. Here is a shot of the meal.

I was still on the hook for dinner tonight as Devin has a few more days of wobbling around the house. I am convinced she really does like to see me come upstairs just to send me down stairs to fetch something for her. And she sits in bed thinking of obscure things that she uses and has no idea where she put them away. So she calls me and I ask from down stairs what she needs and she say come up. I ask if it is something she needs from down stairs she says no. I get in the bedroom and she says, do you know where I put the heating pad. Now folks, I have not used a heating pad since I had an ear ache in the 3rd grade at St. John Brebeuf's in Niles Illinois.

Naturally my quest soon had me downstairs. We still have not found the heating pad. She and these pads filled with oatmeal that you heat in the microwave. So we are now switching hot and cold on her knee. The hot is oatmeal and the cold are frozen peas. This is really fun.

We finished off the night watching Dancing With The Stars. Let's dance our way into the second half of the blog and see what went on in the market.

Making The Call and Getting The Call

It is frustrating to call most of the economic indicators and then not making any money on that accuracy. It is like seeing the end of the next horse race and not being able to make to the window in time to make a bet. China hit us in the stomach first with more disappointing growth news. Political jitters in France and the Netherlands did not help. Then news broke about the Walmart Greeters in Mexico doing more than greeting local officials, as possible bribes for special considerations may come back and bite the retailer in the bottom line. That and Kellog's lowering guidance, set the backdrop for some regional and global economic data point weakness as expected. The moderate volume will not help me figure out whether this is another distribution day until tomorrow.

I was really hoping to see our VXX calls pop on all the disappointing news, but all we say was a 6% gain today. We have a long way to go to see green figures.

Agains my better judgement and breaking one of the rules of the CAN SLIM strategy, we initiated a new position in the main portfolio as well as most others. It was one of the Auer Fund Screen stocks that passed the Buffet screen with flying colors.

The stock is ESIC EasyLink ServicesInternational Corporation provides communication applications that enable enterprises to communicate with their customers, trading partners, and other third parties. EasyLink Services International Corporation was founded in 1991 and is headquartered in Norcross, Georgia.

We got in because of the right criteria but felt $5.21 was a beautiful entry point. Setting a stop at $4.80 is the right thing to do, so we did. The stock is currently well liked by IBD and we have a 28% annual growth projection according to the Buffet Evaluation sheet. We are in for at least 90 days or 4.80 which ever comes first.

Caution:THERE IS STILL A RED FLAG WAIVING.

Here is why there is a red flag waving. It is a heat map of what the market looked like today.
