April/2012

So much to say so little time. I got in to town about 5:00pm tonight. I had been gone since Thursday at O Dark Thirty. It was crammed pack weekend and we do not know where to start.

We (Dennis and I) got on the road at 7:00 am Thursday morning after a quick stop to chow down a bagel. He was not feeling up to being behind the wheel as he is not a professional eater and drinker like me so our evening at Hanna's had taken its toll. It took until Jean Nevada until he could get behind the wheel.

We made it to Provo Utah in about 9 hours and 45 minutes. Then traffic came to a sudden and abrupt halt. Ironically, we hit traffic one minute after we had ordered pizza from a decent place near our off ramp. An hour later we picked up the cold pizza and some necessities for our homes up on top of the world there in Utah. (We each have a house in a development called Suncrest.)

We woofed down some pizza. Dennis enjoyed one of the desserts we bought and I opted to have an 18 year old Glenfiddich. I enjoyed the last minutes of sunlight from our deck facing the Wasatch Mountains

Then it was time to say good night to Mr. Henry while I started the chores of getting the house back in order after 6 months of leaving it empty. You see we have a girl who comes in to clean about once a month, but and empty home lends itself to a few things that need attention.

My first chores was to check for mice gonkers. Our hallway pantry looked pretty good at first. Then I saw it. One little mouse gonker. They never travel alone so I kept looking and there next to the ripped open taco shell box was a bonanza of mice droppings. This trip, the mice did not bother oatmeal, cereal or their usual favorites, Mac and Cheese.

So it was time to pull all the bottles, jars, boxes, and bags off the shelves and start clean up. Those little turdlettes roll a mile. Just looking at them makes them roll off the shelves and scatter miles across a slate floor. It took about 40 minutes to get the shelves back into usable state.

Then it was time to take on the other pantry in the kitchen. I opened and no apparent mice party evidence. Then as I scanned the third shelf I saw the biggest mouse gunker in the history of poopology. This was almost a half inch long. It was deep brown almost black. I took my finger and went to touch it and then I saw about 97 more just like it spilling toward me. It was then I realized it was coffee beans.

These had to be European mice as they only liked coffee, chocolate, and taco shells. The did not touch the teas we had on the shelf and they did not bother any cereal. About 30 minutes more and that pantry was clean.

A job well done, so I treated myself to one more sip of scotch as the stars rose above the East sky over the Wasatch.

Friday I had to get our Utah Ford registered so I got Mr. Henry up early and we headed to my garage to get safety checked. We also had a little Turbo Booster issue with the big Ford we drove up with so we also ran to the Ford dealership and had that addressed.

The rest of the day was spent replacing 16 smoke alarm batteries and numerous light bulbs. We finished the night with great meal with our friend Brian and Elizabeth (She is also a reader.) and their family (less one say hay Marey-missed ya).

Saturday, we geared up and headed for the middle Provo river to scare up some trout. We arrived at the river at 11:00am. At 11:07 am a 30-40 mile wind started blowing. We were fly fishing. 40 mile an hour winds and fly fishing do not mix very well. After about 40 minutes I had crossed the river and out the wind behind me a chose a size 20 Blue Wing Olive Dunn pattern and nailed a nice 6 inch trout. I felt bad as I had a hard time getting the hook out of its lip so I bent back the barb for the rest of the day. I never landed another fish the rest of the day, but had a few real close calls.

Dennis was having a rough day. At one point I watched from the other side of the river as he slowly did an awkward strip tease, removing his waders, then his fishing vest, then his over shirt and finally I figured out he had a fly caught in his shirt. Between that incident and several others, he spent about 23 minutes in the water the whole 6 hours we were there. As I said 40 mile an hour winds and fly fishing do not mix well.

We made it back and had a quick dinner before readying the houses for our long return to California. We beat a nasty winter storm out of the Salt Lake area by a few hours. It made for a beautiful sunrise.

Be patient with me.

I will be honest, as it is 9:55 and I have not looked at Barron's or even seen the action from Friday's day in the market so I will do a quick wrap for tomorrow and catch up wit ya all tomorrow night. (Did I say ya all? Can you tell I have the American Country Music awards on in the back round.

Friday's market was titillated by a better than expected consumer spending number and helped finish a strong quarter. Good news out of Michigan (Consumer Sentiment) and more positive news out of Europe helped bump the market up a half a point. Bad news about Apple and its supplier Foxconn dragged the Nasdaq down, but it finished basically flat. Keeping things sane in the market was some disappointing news from the Purchasing Manager's Index.

Tomorrow, look for a positive number from the Institute for Supply Management survey and a slight improvement in construction spending. We got to watch things closely. PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE CHANGED FROM A GREEN FLAG TO A YELLOW FLAG as our sour days last week added a distribution day putting the NYSE at 7, % on the S&P 500, and 4 on the Nasdaq. We are now in an uptrend UNDER PRESSURE.
