Funky Is As Funky Does

It was a wild and weird weekend. Don't get me wrong, it was one of the best we have had in a while. Our last post here was Thursday night. We told you about the exciting end to football season for the Freshman A Team.

Friday we got up and brought Jack to school as the B Team was traveling to Servite in Anaheim for their season closer. We took care of a few chores around the house then we headed up to Anaheim. About 5 minutes into the first quarter, (that would make it about 10:15 am), it hit me. This was not my Friday off. Ya see, one of the best benefits for working at PADI is what is called a 9/80 schedule where employees get every other Friday off giving them a three day weekend.

It works out good for executive management as well because execs and middle kingdom execs use the Friday off to get caught up, so even though they come in late and dress a little more casual than normal(if that is at all possible-I have seen people come in of Friday in jammies and slippers.), we still manage to squeeze a few more hours out of them. Mmmm, I think I have a t least 6 middle kingdom and upper kingdom readers. Thanks for the loyalty and hard work. Hope you are not reading this on company time. (No I did not this on company time, not today anyway.)

Anywho, I realized my mistake at 10:15ish in Anaheim and felt stupid. It is actually Ellen's fault because she asked to take the day off and without her coming in, I just assumed it was my Friday off. As you can imagine I rushed right from the football filed leaving my wife alone and scrambled to get in the office at a reasonable hour. NOT. I offered up a couple of Hail Mary's and a couple of prayers to the Dive Gods (That would be Course Directors at large-oooppps there goes that First Commandment thing again.). and enjoyed the rest of the game.

Then we got home and picked up Jack. By three Oclock I was headed to Verizon (Cell Phone Service Compnay) to activate my new Apple 4S phone. On the way, I heard we had a good day on Wall Street. Wait a minute. All week long I was getting a warning written in 8.5 point pica type on Charles Schwab and I assumed it was telling me the market was closed for Veteran's Day. (Thank those of you who dropped a note acknowledging my acknowledgement of those brave individuals.) Well I guess the bond market was closed but the stock market was open. Dopey Me.

After I got my new toy working, Devin and I decided to cheat on David Hanna by partaking of the new eatery in the neighborhood. BJ's. The footprint and aesthetics are very nice. Mom always said if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all. Well mom has been gone since 1992 and I don't think she reads my blog. If she did I would be called every time I am critical of the Obama Administration. But I digress, (False Gods and dissing your mother, only 8 more commandmens to go.) the service at BJ's sucked. I am still on the wagon so I got my water right a way. Devin ordered a Royal Crown, Seven Up, and a splash of Ameretto. It should be arriving in February when I am off the wagon. It really took about 15 minutes to get her first drink. Our very adorable waitress took our dinner order (I had chicken parm) and then disappeared. We are talking Houdini, or for you younger readers Chris Angel, disappeared.

Another adorable server came out and served our meals, well actually called out "Who had the chicken parm."  We asked that individual for another drink and he said he would find our server. After about 5 minutes another adorable server came by and asked if we wanted another drink. We said yes and we had asked for one about 10 minutes ago. She said she would find our server. After about 5 more minutes we got the attention of what appeared to be an adorable manager and we explained that we had ordered a drink about 15 minutes earlier and the manager said, "Did you order it from your server?"

We explained about her abduction and the manager explained why we needed to order the drink from in order for it to get on the right bill. The whole time we were talking to the manager, I had flipped over my chicken filet to expose the darkened bottom of my chicken parm. The third degree burns this chicken breast were covering 50% of the birds breast.

Then out of no where our adorable server reappeared with another server to explain she was going on break. A bit redundant we thought but smiled anyway. As Devin was now enjoying her newly arrived drink as our plates waited to be cleared, yet another adorable server came up and asked if we wanted a box, while staring at my very blackened chicken parm. A coffin perhaps was what I wanted to say.

As we left and walked by a multitude of people and heard the hostess tell someone 1 hour and 15 minute wait, I wanted to say get your drink order in NOW, but didn't. Dave you got nothing to worry about.

After getting home at a reasonable hour, we watched a bit of DVR'd telie, and then opened a bunch of e-mails, looked at the goodnews in most of the portfolios, and continued re-reading a book called The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle.

It is a book we read about two years ago and found it enlightening and have recently shared it a few other books with a good friend. I found this book especially rewarding. I highly recommend it.

Saturday, we got up expecting rain and got it, but still made our trek to The Club to visit with the guys. We had a nice breakfast and I was till home in time to get Jack to basketball practice. While he was away, Genghis Devin was busy decorating the house for Christmas. Remember we lost everything in the great flood of 2010, so we must find thousands of quaint ornaments and knock knacks (Which are very similar to Knick Knacks with a typo) to bring the house into the Christmas Spirit. I was busy building little cardboard protectors for the leaves of our dining room table that was salvaged from the flood. She even let me work with tools. I got to use a box cutter. Yes I still have all my fingers.

Then I ventured into the home office and began a straightening 5 years worth of accumulated paperwork. It took a total of about 5 hours over Saturday and Sunday, but we filled a huge garbage can and whittled down the mess to about half a bankers box of files that need to be addressed. A very rewarding experience.

Kristin and Ryan came to visit and we had to remind ourself how a meal is properly prepared and served so we headed to Hanna's for a really nice meal. I had a salad (I am not allowed to mention it had pears, prosciutto ham, burrata cheese and honey or a reader in South Carolina will send me hate mail. That is why this comment is in parentesis because those don't count.) and a delicious cheese burger.

Once home it was veg time watching a good old western with Burt Lancaster as a Hispanic war hero avenging the death of some guy. Burt was a great actor, but his Spanish accents was terrible. Sorry Valedz, you speak Spanish like a gringo American actor. Good movie. Then it was finish reading Barron's, WSJ and the most recent supplement of Value Line Survey.

Today, we met dos amigos at the The Club. Mike bought Tim and I breakfast this morning as we caught up on things. I was home by 8:15 and in the home office finishing my project by 9:00. It took till about 2:00 to get the office looking good. There is a bit of filing ahead of us, but we can handle it. Ryan was very helpful with Jack's Film Homework. I was getting things in order for Jack's religion homework. I know the entire story of Judges. We focused on Gideon and his trumpets. I still haven't figured out the flame in the pitcher thing, but am working on it.

Then finally we got to start our blog. So now you know why ot was funky kinda weekend. Let's take a look at the week that was and the week ahead.

The Friday Off Was On

Last Sunday night about this time we called for a week down about 2.5%. The DOW was up 1.4% and the broader market The S&P 500 was up only .7%. Friday's 2% bump came about because of the promising news out of Italy. Yeah we fell for it again. But so did most of the world as the Euro improved and dollar dipped. Gold went up a bit and Oil (Brent) broke 100.00 a barrel. It was a bumpy crazy week that ended to the upside. Let's look into the crystal ball for this week to see what edges we can put on the puzzle.

Monday

There is a report coming out of the Eurozone on industrial production. Anybody know the largest economy in Europe? That would be Germany. Germany posted a unexpectedly weak industrial production number last week. Any guesses on how this report will turn out? Yeah it should suck. That will not make Mr. market happy, but that is just one piece of the pie. Couple that with what should be a weak Industrial Production number out of Japan. (It is now after 11 and Japan report a nice GDP number. We could have a nice day in the market on Monday) With that said, as I type this at 10:50 PM the markets look to open in the positive tomorrow. Go figure. I still see a low volume day to the down side about .5% (The Japan news came out after I typed this)

Tuesday

A couple of the Regional Fed presidents will be doing sound bites and the market likes to react so be nimble. The Producers Price Index is out on Tuesday and should drop a bit as there are no signs of inflation in energy or commodities. The retail sales figure last month was healthy and we should see the trend continue. Look for number that should make Mr. Market happy as we head into the holidays. The market is up 1.5% today. The Empire State manufacturer report comes out today and it should improve over the last one and the Philly Fed. This will support the 1.5% figure we suggest assuming no Euro Surprised. Berlusconi should be stepping down Tuesday-Thursday, but this is built into the market. Oh yeah it would be a good sign to see business inventories come down a bit. If we get a good drop in inventories, we could see 2% on the market.

Wednesday

The Consumer Price Index should be flat with no surprises. Look for Industrial production to be flat or slightly up. If my guess on inventories turns out to be correct on Tuesday it should create a decent industrial production report. Watch the Energy (Oil and Gas) Report on Wednesday to see how our reserves are. With some instability in Iran Brent could pop up so inventory level will be important.

Thursday

Look for housing starts to come down from the hot number last month. The number will still be weak in the 600,000 range, bit not as nice as the last one.

Friday

A quiet day with only Leading indicators being released. It is expected to be .5% and we cant argue with that.

It is late and you are more tired of reading this than I am writing it, so we will leave you with a mention about the Cover story on Barron's. we have mentioned here many times about the possibility of the Renimbi aka Yuan aka Chinese Dollar becoming the world currency. Kopi Tan does a great piece, well researched and pleasantly presented. The article is great and we recommend it. He points out that after World War Two people started talking about the dollar replacing the Sterling Pound as the world reserve currency and there were quite a few Brits and other who scoffed at the idea, much as many of you might be scoffing at the Yuan becoming the world reserve currency. It took 15 years for the dollar to replace the pound even after it was being used in global reserve transactions.

We will leave you with proof that Jack Cronin is a Man Child. Here are his massive hands enjoying a Supersized Fries from McDonalds.
