Vancouver Yoga Center

Greetings!

We are back in action!

We start a whole new series of class sessions all this week.

Thank you all for being so patient while we closed the studio for a summer break for the teachers.

This offered me the opportunity to begin a year long training in Rolfing or Structural Integration Bodywork, which i am very excited about.  I headed to Georgia to study under Tom Meyers, in the KMI school of Structural Integration. This school is ahead of the curve in the latest research on fascia and muscle pain pattern imbalances. It speaks to addressing pain and disturbances in the body's alignment and structure through the manual manipulation of the fascia that covers all muscles, bones and structures inside the body. A lot of the information is also translatable and applicable to movement. I'm very interested to bring this new research into application into the yoga practice. The use of movement, ie. Yoga, to restructure and align the body to ease pain & injuries has been a main focus of mine over the last 15 years. This next schooling will inform more deeply the work that I have been creating over the last decade.

I look forward to working with you more deeply and closely, in the classes and in my massage practice, to aid in greater freedom in your body and thus offer more room for joy to be present.

Other happenings this fall...

Classes and Workshops

Dr. Zorn our resident mediation and eastern philosophy teacher at the center will continue his Dharma Dialogue and Meditations one Sunday each month. This will be a 2 hour offering. Lecture, time for Q & A followed by guided mediation practice of 20-30 min.

And i will be gearing up for the next teachers training scheduled to begin January 2012

Yoga Teacher & Yoga As Structural Therapy Training - January 2012

Our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program is a great opportunity to deepen your understanding of Yoga philosophy and Anusara Yoga principles. This program is structured for anyone who wishes to teach or who desire to immerse more deeply in a Yoga practice.  Registration due by Dec 1st.

If you've already completed a Teacher's Training program, I also offer a 100-hour Yoga As Structural Therapy Training program. This is a first of its kind in this area, and truly a first of its kind for the depth of structural body alignment and injury specific work it provides. Check it out!  Registration due by Dec 1st

This fall, we'll offer three continuing education classes for Yoga teachers in the three key areas I think are the hardest for a teacher to develop...

The Art of Verbalizing: Learn to verbally guide students into and out of Yoga poses effectively, efficiently and safely while also offering a richer, deeper Yoga experience. Oct 15th, 12PM-6PM

The Art of Seeing: Recaps the Universal Principles of Alignment of Anusara Yoga. We may know them intellectually and feel them in our bodies, but seeing them play out in a variety of bodies and poses helps reinforce their meaning and application. Nov 5th 12PM-6PM

The Art of Hands-on Adjustments: How we touch is vitally important. This workshop is held last for a reason - effective and safe touch and adjustments are so important, but to accomplish this we we must first bring proficient communication and seeing to our teaching. Dec 3rd 12PM-6PM

Enjoy the rest of summerbe well, and keep shining your light!

Seven foods for the Body, Mind & Spirit
By Melonie Nielsen

The ancient science of Yoga is a simple, natural program involving five main principles designed to slow the aging process and keep the physical and mental faculties strong and the spirit bright. These five main principles are: 1) proper exercise 2) proper breathing 3) proper relaxation 4) proper diet and 5) positive thinking and meditation. This system was designed with the idea that we were not born merely to be subject to pain, suffering, disease, death, or as my good friend Dr. Zorn says, "we are not here to grow an economy". On the contrary, there is a far greater purpose and experience to Life!......

Handstand

Adho mukha vrksasana, also known as handstand is probably the most familiar and symmetrically graceful asana of the arm balance variations. Some of us probably attempted this pose as a fearless kid, before we knew what it meant to fall on our head. If you grew up watching or participating in gymnastics you might remember the ease and strength demonstrated as gymnasts executed this inversion in their routines. Some of us (the author included) wait until later in life to attempt the challenge of turning ourselves upside down while balancing on our arms and creating a straight line from hands to feet. The stability of adho mukha vrksasana begins with enthusiasm and grounding through the four corners of the hands and continues circumferentially along the muscles of the arms and shoulders until there is a genuine embrace of the shoulder blades on the upper back. This line of energy into the heart focal point is complimented by the ability to extend down towards the earth and up towards the sky with pranic force through the bones.
The strength required of the wrists, arms and shoulders relates to the attitude of steadfastness and the dedication we make to ourselves, our loved ones, and all things sacred. When learning handstand it is equally important to remember your connection to the greater tapestry of life and practice with a sense of surrender and acceptance. Striving and competition will not be advantageous when connecting with the heart, take this advice from one who knows!

Now once the focal point is strong and stable the real trick is bringing the hips over the shoulders and the feet over the hips. Think of the standing upright, straight and still Tadasana or samasthiti, with even support of the muscles on all sides of the legs and tonus to the pelvic floor and navel area. This feeling is what needs to be simulated when standing equally on the hands in the divine flow of gravity. Downward facing tree is renowned for the core strength required to position the pelvis and feet over the support of the heart. This requires concentration to the central mid-line and gives us a direct core experience into the nature and action associated with the wisdom of yoga. This wisdom gives us a glimpse into the psycho/emotional web within us and over time provides clarity regarding our fears, perceived limitations, and fluctuations of thoughts.

In public yoga classes handstand is great for the spirit of community as it excites conversation while instilling confidence, support and trust; very important if you are kicking up for the first time with a fellow yogi assisting you!

Adho Muhka Vrksasana should not be practiced in cases of cardiovascular disease, brain tumors, or traumas without consent of a physician. Many yoga teachers believe it should not be practiced by women during the first(heavy) days of menstruation, be sure to check with your instructor.
