On Friday, April 22nd, we held our 11th Annual "Superheroes for Youth" Celebrity Waiter Luncheon!  This fun-filled fundraiser brought together over 700 guests, waiters, and volunteers, all to raise money for STAR/PAL programming!

We are excited to announce that we hit our event fundraising goal of $100,000 (net)!  We are so grateful for all the wonderful underwriting, sponsorships, and other support we received this year.  We were thrilled to have hosted our event this year at the Market Creek Events & Venues at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center!  Our celebrity waiters, our guests, and our volunteers all had a few laughs while showing their dedication to a truly worthwhile cause...the youth in our community.

We were also very successful in "friend-raising" at the luncheon for Friends of STAR/PAL!  Thank you to each and every one of you who so proudly placed the STAR/PAL lapel pin on your outfit!  Those envelopes keep on coming and we encourage those who didn't sign up at the event to consider being a Friend today.

Sony SnapLab, F&L Media Productions, and Mike Nowak Photography did a great job of capturing the event moments on film.  We invite you to take a look at our event photo gallery (click here).

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this year's Luncheon a great success!  We hope to see you all next year!

Programming Highlights

GirL-E inspires change  GirL-E (Lanae and female participant)

The GirL-E (Leadership & Empowerment) program offers a 6-week curriculum designed to empower participating teenage girls by developing their decision-making skills. This life-changing, educational program focuses on building self-esteem & making healthy choices. Lessons provide girls with the tools to avoid risky adolescent behaviors. Since January, GirL-E  has been offered as a diversion program to over 100 girls who have been arrested for truancy or curfew violations in lieu of entering the juvenile justice system.

InterACTion takes the stage

This 10-session program brings law enforcement officers & a teaching artist from La Jolla Playhouse together inside the classroom of Lincoln High School.  This curriculum is designed to assist students to learn the necessary tools to make positive life choices, using theater as a medium to express their thoughts and emotions about the challenges they may face in their community. The fall semester concluded in early 2011, with 92 students performing their own personal monologues.

Teen-LEAP students make their mark

Students from Gompers Academy Preparatory have made their mark on the Diamond District this semester with a presentation to the San Diego City Council President, Tony Young, about Teen-LEAP with Council Pres Youngfighting blight within their community.  Youth presented a plan to clean graffiti off a neighborhood building and replace it with a mural.  The program included a trip to the Museum of Tolerance where students had an opportunity to talk with a holocaust survivor.

STAR/PAL's mentoring program wraps up

Thanks to a National PAL grant received in May of 2010, we launched our first mentoring program at Ibarra Elementary with 30 students from 5th-grade who were matched with mentor volunteers from the community and law enforcement.  During their weekly meetings, youth & their mentors shared fun adventures, including a Julian Field Trip and multiple team sports activities.  Mentees even learned about giving back to their community by making quilts for foster youth.  With such a successful program, STAR/PAL was awarded the National PAL grant again for 2011!

Basketball Clinic  Basketball Clinic

Our annual basketball clinic took place at the San Diego Municipal Gymnasium, in Balboa Park. The clinic is designed for boys and girls ages 7-14 at beginner to intermediate levels who are interested in learning basic fundamental basketball techniques.  Each participant received an event t-shirt and was treated to a lunch upon completion of the clinic.

Annual Shop With A Cop

Shop With A CopPlanning is already underway for our Annual Shop With A Cop program.  Last December, more than 300 less fortunate children got paired up with a law enforcement officer to enjoy breakfast and a private animal show at SeaWorld before embarking on a $100 holiday shopping spree at Target.  This annual event is sponsored by local law enforcement agencies, SeaWorld, Target, the San Diego Crime Commission, and STAR/PAL.

Annual Chief's Challenge
TRI-N-HARDER-4-KIDS Indoor Triathlon

San Diego Police Department & STAR/PAL hosted the first ever Chief's Challenge Indoor Triathlon this year at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center.  Officers from SDPD & other local agencies put their athletic ability to the test in order to help raise money to support underserved youth!  The indoor triathlon consisted of a 10 minute pool swim, 20 minute cycle ride (stationary bike), and a 15 minute treadmill run.

SDPD Assistant Chief Shelley Zimmerman, a regular competitor in the local indoor & outdoor triathlons, challenged fellow law enforcement officers to compete in this fun-filled event to raise money for the most worthwhile cause in our community: kids!  Thanks to the dedication of officers to go the extra mile, this year's triathlon raised $9,000!

Those interested in competing in, helping with, or sponsoring this event next year...please mark your calendars for Saturday, January 21, 2012!
