Hope everyone is enjoying our cooler fall "football weather"! As we enter the last quarter of this 2012 calendar year, please take note of the many upcoming community events and the special events celebrating Mobile County's Bicentennial year. On Veterans Day, November 11, 2012 at 3:30 p.m., the Mobile Symphony Orchestra will perform a patriotic musical tribute to our nation's veterans in the new Mobile County Bicentennial Pavilion at Medal of Honor Park off Hillcrest Road.  MOBILE COUNTY APPROVES FY2013 BUDGET budgetapproval

On Wednesday, September 26, 2012 the Mobile County Commission approved a $187.6 million budget for fiscal year (FY) 2013. The budget represents an increase of 1.8% over 2012 revenues or $3.3 million more. 

 

Mobile County Commission general fund revenues for FY2013 are projected to be $121 million, an increase of .81% over FY2012.

 

Budgeted expenditures for FY2013 are $168.5 million. This is $2.6 million or 1.6% more than budgeted expenditures for FY2012. Budgeted expenditures for the Mobile County Commission General Fund are $118.9 million, which is an increase of $1.6 million or 1.3% above budgeted general fund expenditures for FY2012.

 

The Mobile County Commission functions as the budgetary authority for County Administration and Engineering as well as for the offices of the Revenue Commission, License Commission, Probate Judge, Sheriff's Office, and County Treasurer. In addition, the Commission is also required by law to provide a portion of funds for the District Attorney's Office, District and Circuit Courts and Juvenile Court.  MOBILE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: AIRBUS UPDATE FOR LOCAL VENDORS Airbusvendors

The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce has received information from Airbus to help answer two of the most common questions - "How does my company become a supplier for the Airbus Alabama 320 final assembly line project?" and "How does my company become a supplier in Airbus's production supply chain?"

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL ADOPT A DOG MONTHawardacca

 

The Mobile County Animal Shelter currently has 77 animals ready for adoption. The cost for adoption of unaltered animals, or animals that have not previously been spayed or neutered, are $80 for dogs and $70 for cats (fees include spaying and neutering, rabies shot, 5-in-1 vaccination, and wormer). Altered animals are $40 for dogs and $30 for cats (fees include rabies shot, 5-in-1 vaccination, and wormer).

  

The MCAS kennel hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays (for adoption only). The Shelter is closed on Sundays.

ZUMBA AT SEMMES COMMUNITY CENTER

 

When: 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays

Come and join instructor Carrie Wiley for Zumba, a low-impact dance workout class. All ages are welcome. Skid-proof shoes are a requirement.

Pack and bring a bagged lunch and sit under the oak trees in Bienville Square. Live music provided by the City of Mobile and Catt Sirten.

THE PUMPKIN PATCH! AT DAUPHIN WAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 

 

When: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., October 5 to October 31

Where: 1507 Dauphin Street, Mobile

 

Come and pick out the perfect pumpkin for Halloween. The public is also invited to a Fall Festival in the Pumpkin Patch 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, October 28. Costumes are welcomed, but not required. There will be free popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, drinks, a train ride and inflatables. In addition, Dauphin Way's own J. C.'s Construction Company Puppet Team will be performing

BAYFEST- ALABAMA'S LARGEST MUSIC FESTIVAL

 

When: October 5 through October 7

Where: Downtown Mobile

 

 

BayFest will celebrate its 18th anniversary this year with an expected crowd of more than 200,000 guests, who will be Downtown Mobile to see over 125 live musical acts on nine stages during the weekend. BayFest has become known throughout the region for its vast array of renowned musical talent appealing to a wide variety of tastes and suitable for the entire family. The event also includes a family stage and an extensive children's activity area.

 

Cost: Weekend Pass $45, Day Pass (limited availability) $30, Children under 12 admitted free. Group discounts available to groups of 20 or more.

CHUNCHULA HOME DEMONSTRATION CLUB FISH FRY AND COUNTRY STORE

Proceeds from this family fun event will benefit historic preservation of the Chunchula schoolhouse. Plates will include catfish, slaw, beans, slice of cake and a drink for $8.50.

The Healthy Living Senior Expo is a free event pertinent to seniors and provides participants with resources geared toward their interests and needs featuring free health screenings, a flu clinic, a blood drive, demonstrations for healthy living, refreshments and door prizes. Exhibitor booths are available for all businesses that provide a service for seniors in the community. Community Businesses- $150; Non Profit Organizations- $50 or $25 cash and a door prize of $25 value.

BELLINGRATH GARDENS AND HOME FALL FLORAL SHOWCASE FEATURING JAMES FARMER

  

When: 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 10

This year's event will feature James Farmer of James Farmer Designs located in Kathleen, Georgia. The day will include a floral demonstration by James, book signing with James and lunch with James and Bellingrath's own Dr. Bill Barrick. After lunch, the pair will lead a special tour through the Gardens to discuss the fall plants and how to use them in floral arrangements. The day will conclude with tours through the Bellingrath Museum Home featuring floral arrangements by some of the region's top floral designers.

ROUGH AND TUMBLE: BICYCLE POLO TOURNAMENT AT CHICKASABOGUE PARK

 

When: Noon Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14

Where: Chickasabogue Park, 60 Aldock Road, Eight Mile

 

If you are looking for excitement, bordering on a bit of madness, 22 teams will be competing in a bicycle polo tournament at Mobile County's Chickasabogue Park. The high-speed, hard-court game is relatively new and combines a little of street hockey with horse polo, except that the mode of transportation is all manner of bicycles. Play will start Saturday, October 13 to determine seeding, with double-elimination competition the following Sunday.

 

Cost: The event is free and open to the public. Cost to enter the park is $1 for adults.

NAMI MOBILE 3RD ANNUAL FRIENDS AND FAMILY WALK FOR MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS

This walk is to raise awareness and break the stigma that surrounds mental illnesses and is a fun family event with entertainment for children.

This event is a fundraiser to support the Via Senior Center programs and services benefiting more than 22,000 seniors in the community.

MOBILE COUNTY BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE PRESENTS: BOBBY SOCKS AND BLUE SUEDE SHOES: A TRIBUTE TO ELVIS

When: 7 p.m. Friday, October 19

Where: Holiday Inn Downtown Ballroom, 301 Government Street, Mobile

 

Mobile will shake, rattle and roll at a Tribute to Elvis Gala hosted by the Mobile Bicentennial Commission, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization formed to lead the celebrations for the county's 200th birthday year. This event will feature Elvis food (cheeseburger sliders et al) and an Elvis impersonator show by Shane Tucker - a local Elvis tribute artist with a long resume of performances on the Gulf Coast. An Elvis musical evening will be provided courtesy of DJ Glenn Normand with a background laser light show by Mike Dorsett. Festivities will also include a 1950's costume contest - blue suede shoes optional - with prizes for the winners. A cash bar and heavy hors d'oeuvres will be offered.

SAINT PAUL'S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL FALL SHOW "METAMORPHOSES"

St. Paul's Fall Show, now in its second year, presents a play that is a bit different than traditional fare. Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses, directed by Chip Goff, mixes drama, comedy, and romance in an exploration of the necessity of change. Portraying tales from Greek and Roman mythology, the play seeks to excite with storytelling, amaze with movement, and surprise with its portrayals of well-known, and some lesser-known, mortals and immortals. For an experience you won't soon forget, come to Fall Show 2012! The play is best suited to high school-aged students and older.

BALLOON GLOW IN THE GARDENS

Dress up your little goblins and come out to enjoy beautiful hot air balloons glowing on the Great Lawn. Multiple hot air balloons are scheduled to "glow" for us this year-weather permitting. This year's event will also include a selection of scary and fun inflatables glowing throughout the Gardens. There will be plenty of treats and trinkets from area organizations and businesses for our trick or treaters to enjoy. The Shed BBQ and Blues Joint will be in the Gardens selling their one-of-a-kind and national award-winning barbecue and live music will be on the Great Lawn.

 

Cost: Special Admission: Adults $6, Children 5-12 $3; Children 4 and under are free. Discounted admission begins at 5 p.m.

Each edition of the District 2 E-Newsletter will highlight an area of service, service agency, or a county service that is funded by the Mobile County Commission.
  

MOBILE COUNTY FINANCE DEPARTMENT

  

The Mobile County Commission Finance Department, under the direction of Mrs. Michelle Herman, has 20 employees. The department is responsible for financial accounting and reporting, coordination of the annual audit, development of the annual budget, coordination of debt issuance and post-issuance compliance, coordination and monitoring of appropriation contracts, purchasing, payroll, accounts payable and collection and compliance monitoring for Tobacco Tax for the County and the City of Mobile.

 

A few highlights of the department's work include the following:

  • The payroll section processes about 46,000 checks per year.
  • The accounts payable section processes about 14,000 checks annually for a total of about $145,000,000.
  • The purchasing department processes about 70 annual bids , which consist of asphalt, construction supplies, uniforms, electrical equipment, fuel, oil, tires, dairy products, and janitorial and guard services.
  • During fiscal 2012 the finance department coordinated the development of the Mobile County Commission's first 10-year Capital Improvement Plan.

MOBILE COUNTY FINANCIAL UPDATE FOR AUGUST 2012 
MCFinancialUPDATE The August report reflects expenses for 23 biweekly payrolls. Through August we expect to see no more than 88% to 89% of the biweekly personnel budget utilized. Expenditures for Monthly payroll should not exceed 92%. Salary reimbursements from grant funds often lag by at least one month. Operating expenses also lag by nearly a month. We expect operational expenditures to be below 92% in this report. Through August we have expended 88% of the general fund personnel budget and 78% of the general fund operating budget.

Chartered by the Alabama Legislature in 1854, the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce was the first in the state and carried several names throughout its 175-year history: the Mobile Board of Trade, the Mobile Chamber of Commerce and Maritime Exchange and Shipping Association. Since 1960, the name has remained solid- Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce.
