MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER HUDSON

Hope everyone is enjoying our mild and beautiful spring weather! There are a lot of upcoming events throughout the Mobile area to enjoy, so please be sure to check out our Calendar of Events. April has been designated as National County Government Month with the theme of promoting "Healthy Counties, Healthy Families". To highlight this theme and the role of the public parks in promoting healthy lifestyles for families, the Mobile County Commission will unveil a parks brochure to highlight the many activities and amenities of the five County owned and maintained parks and recreational facilities, encompassing over 1,000 acres of beautifully designed properties with scenic viewing of Mobile Bay, hiking, frisbee, golf and picnic areas, as well as baseball and softball fields. The comprehensive brochure is expected to be completed within the next two weeks and will be available to access on-line at the County's website http://www.mobilecountyal.gov for your convenience. Utilizing the amenities of our public parks is a wonderful and economical way to enjoy the outdoors, improve health and spend time with friends and family!

Warmest Regards,

CITY OF SEMMES HIRES FULL TIME FIREFIGHTERS

The City of Semmes has officially hired four full-time firefighters to  improve round-the-clock fire and rescue assistance services at the Semmes Volunteer Fire Department for fire, medical and other emergency calls - lowering response times for emergencies. This action will help take some of the pressure off of volunteers who answer and respond to over 200 calls per month (one of the highest of all fire departments in Mobile County). Improving response times is expected to result in lower homeowner insurance rates when Semmes is reviewed for an ISO rating.

"We have, what I believe, is the best fire department and volunteers in Mobile County." said Mayor Judy Hale, "Now, we're going to be even better - faster response times will result in saving lives and property. And the bottom line is that is the number one responsibility of a city - to provide for the health, safety and well-being of its citizens."

MOBILE COUNTY FINANCIAL UPDATE
MCFinancialUPDATEThe 02/29/2012 budget report reflects general fund revenues and expenditures for the first five months of fiscal 2012. Through February of 2012 we have completed 42% of the fiscal year. Receipt of many of our major revenues lags by one month. In the January 2012 financials we reported revenue of $61,371,982.47. This represents 51.15% of budgeted FY 2012 revenues. Almost all revenue from property taxes and business licenses are collected in December of each fiscal year. We expect expenditures to be below 42% for the year on this report. The health, sanitation, and culture and recreation functions are primarily appropriations that are paid quarterly. Expenditures for total budgeted capital have been completed. Through February both expenditures and revenues are within expected ranges.

DID YOU KNOW? MOBILE COUNTY FUN FACTS...

The City of Citronelle was named after the citronella plant, which grows throughout the town.

When the Citronelle area was first explored by Europeans in the 18th Century, it quickly became a popular destination because of the healing properties believed to be possessed by the plants, herbs and springs abundant throughout the region. When the Mobile & Ohio Railway constructed a line through the area in 1852, the railroad representatives named it after one of the most abundant of the these plants: the Citronella plant.

KUDOS & CONGRATULATIONS!
