TURNERVILLE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES GRANT FOR AIR PACKS
Commissioner Hudson recently sponsored a $12,000 grant award from District 2 Commission funds to the Turnerville Volunteer Fire Department for the purchase of new air packs. The new packs will increase firefighters' breathing time by 30 to 45 minutes when they enter burning buildings, respond to vehicle fires or encounter carbon-monoxide, chemical or biological hazards. According to Chief Bill Smith, "This state-of-the-art equipment is essential to our department's functions in order for us to save more lives in dangerous situations." The department was also given funding to purchase an air compressor by Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, District 1. The Turnerville Volunteer Fire Department serves citizens living within both Commission Districts 1 and 2.

The City of Semmes recently dedicated their renovated City Hall
offices and Council Chamber located at 7875 Moffett Road. Semmes officials met initially at Semmes First Baptist Church until the renovations were completed. According to Mayor Judy Hale, the City spent about $40,000 laying down carpet and tile and dividing the space into individual offices. City officials participated in a ribbon-cutting and a flag-raising to commemorate the evening. Also during the council meeting, the city contributed $46,000 to the Semmes Volunteer Fire Department. Chief Terry Sexton said the department will use the funds to purchase fifteen new sets of firefighter gear and two new jaws-of-life which will upgrade the deteriorating 10-year-old fire-fighting gear and hydraulic rescue tool that the volunteers currently use.
MOBILE COUNTY FINANCIAL UPDATE
MCFinancialUPDATEThe 10/31/2011 budget report reflects general fund revenue and expenditures for the first month of fiscal 2012. Through October of 2011 we have completed 8% of the fiscal year. Receipt of many of our major revenues lag by one month. In the October 2011 financials we reported revenue of $4,961,610.37. This represents 4.14% of budgeted revenue for fiscal 2012. We expect expenditures for the first month of the fiscal year to be below 8%. The budget report shows budgeted and actual expenditures by function. Through the end of October, 5.31% of the budget was expended. Expenditures in the health, culture and recreation area are paid on a quarterly basis. This is reflected in the higher level of expenditures in these two functional categories.

 ROAD PROJECTS UPDATE

Road projects in the city limits of Mobile, paid for through the Mobile County Pay-As-You-Go Program, are progressing, according to Nick Amberger, City of Mobile Engineer. Free to everyone New Year's Eve celebration featuring a Mardi Gras-style parade, a street party with live entertainment and, at midnight, the Moon Pie drop from the RSA BankTrust Tower, accompanied by a laser and fireworks show.

MOBILE IN LIGHTS TO BENEFIT MCKEMIE PLACE

                                           

When: 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Saturday, December 31

Where: Mobile Convention Center, Cityscape Gallery, 1 Water Street, Mobile 

 

McKemie Place, a safe haven for single homeless women that offers counseling and shelter, will be hosting a semi-formal fundraiser event in the Mobile Convention Center's Cityscape Gallery on New Year's Eve. This event will feature a fabulous menu, a live band and a beautiful indoor and outdoor view of the Moon Pie Drop at midnight.  

 

Cost: $50 per person or $450 per table of 10, ticket purchases are tax deductible donations.

GREER'S/PRESS REGISTER MARDI GRAS PARADE & PEP RALLY

When: Parade begins at 6:30 p.m. Pep rally will follow at 8 p.m. Thursday, January 7

Sixteen Mardi Gras societies will be represented with floats and throws for the crowd. Several local high school marching bands will join the parade, as well as the bands and cheerleaders from each participating GoDaddy.com Bowl team. A huge crowd is expected to pack the streets of downtown Mobile for this early rendition of the Mardi Gras season. Join the pep rally afterwards to see the Spectronics fireworks display over the Mobile River.

CAN-STRUCTURE: A SOCIAL DESIGN COMPETITION TO BENEFIT BAY AREA FOOD BANK


When: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, January 7
Where: Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center, 65 Royal Street, Mobile

Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood Inc., a local architectural and engineering firm, and the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center are pleased to announce a month long food-drive culminating in a "Can-Structure" event to be held on January 7, 2012 at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. Teams of area high school students will have four hours to build their structures made completely out of canned food items which will be donated to the Bay Area Food Bank following the event. "We're so excited to see what these bright and talented students can produce. After all, these are our future architects, designers and engineers in the making!" says Kirsten Conley, Director of Marketing for the Exploreum. In celebration of the Exploreum's upcoming exhibit, Megalodon, the creative theme of the structures will be "Under the Sea". 

 

As further incentive to give to the hungry, the Exploreum is giving free admission to the science center to visitors who donate three or more cans of food on Saturday, January 7th to benefit the Bay Area Food Bank. 

 

Judging will happen immediately after time is called. The structures will be judged by a special panel of Mobile dignitaries and will be based on creativity, difficulty, and stability. The winners will be announced at 1p.m. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place school awards and recognition. A special viewers choice award, based on public response, will also be presented.

BANK TRUST FIRST LIGHT MARATHON

This run features a pre-event pasta dinner, Marathon, Half-Marathon, 5-person relay, and a 1.2 mile fun-run and benefits L'Arche of Mobile, a non-profit agency that serves those with intellectual disabilities.

The Winter Soccer Academy will focus on individual skill development, strength and conditioning and injury prevention. Camp is open to any and all applicants ages 8-18 regardless of skill level.

2012 SENIOR BOWL

The annual Senior Bowl is the nation's most unique football game and football's premier pre-draft event. It features the country's best senior collegiate football stars and top NFL draft prospects on teams representing the North and South which are coached by the entire coaching staffs from two National Football League teams. Senior Bowl practices are also attended by over 800 general managers, head coaches, assistant coaches, scouts and other front-office personnel from the 32 National Football League teams, making Mobile and the Senior Bowl the week-long host to a one-of-a-kind NFL Coaches Convention.

SpotlightEach edition of the District 2 E-Newsletter will highlight an area of service, service agency, or a county service that is funded by the Mobile County Commission.

Mobile County Extension Office: Jon Archer Agricultural Center

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System operates as the primary outreach organization for the land-grant functions of Alabama A&M and Auburn Universities.  The Mobile County Extension Office serves the citizens of Mobile County in the areas of agriculture, family consumer science, urban affairs, community and economic development, and 4-H youth development

 

According to the 2007 census of Agriculture, Mobile County has 876 farms on 113,653 acres with an average farm size of 130 acres. Farm acreage represents 14.4 percent of the total 789,120 acres in Mobile County. Agriculture continues to make a significant contribution to the county economy. Mobile County agriculture is very diverse with greenhouse, nursery, and sod ranked number one in the state and pecan production ranked number two. Other crops grown include cotton, peanuts, soybean, corn, fruits and vegetables, livestock and forage. 

  

The Mobile County Extension Office has 15 full-time and two part-time employees led by Mr. Jim Todd, County Extension Coordinator. They offer educational programs to improve the quality of life of area citizens.  Some of the more popular Extension programs include Master Gardener, Classroom in the Forest-Forest in the Classroom, Food Safety for Seniors, Forage Nutrition, Precision Agriculture, Successful Aging Initiative, Urban Nutrition Education, Cotton and Peanut Production, Community Garden Development, Horticulture Series, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education, ServSafe for Commercial Food Establishments, Broadband Connection, 4-H Teen Leadership Connection, 4-H Health Rocks, and 4-H Junior Master Gardener.
