MOBILE IS IN THE FINALS FOR A DOG PARK: VOTE TODAY!

 

There are only 10 days left to vote for Mobile as the winner of a $100,000 grant for the construction of a community dog park in Medal of Honor Park off Hillcrest Road. You can vote every day, until Wednesday, August 3 on both the PetSafe site and on Facebook.  

 

At the end of the three-week voting period, the finalist community with the most votes will receive $100,000 towards building a PetSafe dog park. PetSafe will announce the winner in August. MAYOR SAM JONES ANNOUNCES CRIME PACKAGE   

 

Mayor Sam Jones announced Wednesday several proposed initiatives to address juvenile violence that include; tactical policing and tougher amendments to the indecent exposure and copper theft ordinances for the City of Mobile. Juvenile Curfew: Juveniles 17 yearsold and under are subject to the curfew. 

 

Curfew Hours: During weekdays, the curfew goes into effect from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.; on weekends from 12:01 a.m. until 6 a.m.; and 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on weekdays while school is in session.

 

Penalty: 1. Under the curfew, a minor will be subject to a fine and other penalties authorized by Juvenile Court; 2. Parents, guardians and business owners who knowingly allow juveniles to remain on their premises during curfew hours are subject to fines after the first violation and subsequent violations; 3. The curfew also carries a possible six month jail term for second offenses by parents, guardians and business owners; In addition, after a second violation, the juvenile will be transported to a curfew center housed at the City's Western Administrative Complex on Museum Drive. A parent or guardian will be required to pick the juvenile up from the Center.   

Copper Ordinance: Junk dealers who purchase copper, brass or other metals will be required to mail payments to sellers via a check or a bank draft.

 

Penalty: $250 first offense; $300 second offense and $500 subsequent offenses; or six months in jail. In addition to the amendment to the Copper Ordinance, Jones will ask the City Council to join him in a resolution petitioning the Legislature to pass legislation making the city's Copper Ordinance uniform throughout Mobile County.   

  

Indecent Exposure: Under the amendment, the wearing of pants or skirts more than four inches below the top of the hips, exposing undergarments, is illegal. The amendment to the ordinance is citywide. 

 

Penalty: $50 for first offense; $200 for each subsequent offense.

The Mayor's proposals require City Council approval before adoption. The Council's first public hearing and meeting on these initiatives is currently scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 26 in the Government Plaza Auditorium.
