MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER CONNIE HUDSON
Thank you so much to our military veterans! Yesterday marked the annual holiday to honor all U.S. military veterans for their service to our country in protecting our freedoms. What first began as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I became Veterans Day in 1954 through a congressional bill signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to honor and remember all U.S. military veterans. This year's commemorative event sponsored by the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Day Commission in Mobile County honored retired Colonel Pat Downing as Veteran of the Year. Colonel Downing was selected as the 2010 honoree for his distinguished career of military service and long-time support of veterans' affairs. The 2010 Patriot of the Year award was given to Emmy award-winning actress Ann-Margret for her service in touring the globe to entertain troops.
We are all so very blessed and fortunate to live in the United States of American and in Mobile County Alabama. The service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform throughout the history of our great country has allowed us all to enjoy freedom and liberty...To them we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving everyone!

CITY OF SEMMES STATUS UPDATE
Residents of the proposed City of Semmes voted to incorporate on Aug. 17, 2010. The effort for incorporation was spearheaded by the Friends of Semmes Inc., a non-profit group of community leaders that support giving Semmes residents a more direct voice in the future and growth of the community. Following the successful incorporation vote, Mobile County Probate Judge Don Davis ordered a census of the inhabitants residing within the boundaries of the new city. Sworn volunteers are currently conducting a door-to-door census to collect demographic data from Semmes residents. "Pre-clearance" for the boundary line change required after the election was sought from and approved by the Department of Justice. Upon completion of the census, the Probate Judge will issue the Order of Incorporation, meaning that the new City formally exists. Municipal elections for Mayor and City Council will follow.

SPOTLIGHT ON COUNTY SERVICES
Each Edition of the District 2 E-Newsletter will highlight an area of service, service agency, or a county service that is predominantly funded by the Mobile County Commission.
Mobile County Senior Companion Program
The Senior Companion Program engages people 55 and older, particularly those with limited incomes, in volunteer service to meet critical community needs and provide a high quality experience that enriches the lives of the volunteers.
Senior Companions provide assistance to frail home-bound individuals who have difficulties with daily living necessary to maintain independence. With training they learn to become the eyes and ears of their Senior Companion clients and are able to alert doctors and family members of potential health problems. They also learn how to assist those with Alzheimer's disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and other physical and mental health challenges. The daily assistance provided by Senior Companions helps others maintain a higher level of independent living. Many frail seniors are able to remain in their homes rather than move to nursing homes because they can't live alone.
Several non-profit social service agencies (such as DHR, the Area Agency on Aging and the Alzheimer's Foundation) identify those in need of assistance with activities of daily living and refer them to the Senior Companion Program. To participate you must be age 55 or older and meet income requirements. For anyone interested in information or requesting Senior Companion assistance, call 574-3232.
