Spring Break Tips

Greetings!

As temperatures are beginning to rise and summer is starting to feel just around the corner, many of you may be planning a trip over your spring break to get a glimpse of the warm weather ahead. While we want you to have fun in the sun, don't forget o protect yourself when you're outside.

 1. Minimize sun exposure when the sun is highest in the sky (this is when the UV Rays are the strongest);

2. Wear the best available UV protective clothing and accessories - don't forget your hat, sunglasses, and cover up;

3. Properly use the best available sun screen (at least an SPF of 15 with UVA/UVB protection).

No matter where you find yourself this spring break, remember to live sun smart and skin safe!

Happy Spring from,

No to Teen
Indoor Tanning

It appears unlikely that all Illinois legislators will have the opportunity to consider banning teens from indoor UV tanning dangers this legislative session.

Neither House Bill 1666 nor Senate Bill 1329 has been passed out of committee as of this writing.   Despite this, the conversation will continue with legislators, and even more importantly, with the public.  The increased education of the dangers of indoor tanning is critical and these bills helped raise attention in the media.

Below are a few recent examples:

Education of how to protect from UV radiation, along with how to detect UV damage early, is the mission of the Skin of Steel Glenview Campaign.

Myth of the Safe "Base Tan"
The Myth of the
"Base Tan"

The concept of exposing skin gradually to greater amounts of UV radiation for a "base tan"  before traveling from our Midwest early spring weather to sunny destinations far to our south, might seem like a good idea, but remember there is no such thing as a safe tan.  UV radiation damages the skin. Period.
