ILLINOIS LEGISLATORS SCHOENBERG AND GABEL DEMONSTRATE THEIR SUPPORT FOR LIVING SKIN SAFE
Current Illinois Admin. Code Title 77; Sec. 795.190 (c) states that children under 14 are prohibited from indoor tanning. A parent/guardian must sign a consent form in the presence of the facility operator if a child is 14-17 years old indicating that they understand the warnings.
This has been the law in Illinois while other states have taken the lead in protecting all minors from the dangers of indoor tanning, which is now recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), most Western European governments, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), and others, as a known carcinogen.
AIM at Melanoma, an important advocacy group nationwide, recently teamed with Skin of Steel Board Members, to help bring the discussion to Springfield.
In February 2011, bills were introduced to both the Illinois House and Senate to increase protection for Illinois children. Senate Bill 1329 was introduced by Senator Jeffery M. Schoenberg of the 9th District, and HB 1666 was introduced was introduced by Representative Robyn Gabel of the 18th District.
