Greetings!
Skin of Steel and the Glenview Campaign have been working over these winter months on a variety of initiatives to further our mission. Our new email communication system is launching today to let you know of some important work that has started in Springfield that needs some urgent action.
In the past two weeks, two important bills have been introduced in Springfield. Senate Bill 1329 was introduced by Senator Jeffery M. Schoenberg of the 9th District and House Bill 1666 was introduced by Representative Robyn Gabel of the 18th District.
These bills both include important amendments to Illinois law that would prohibit the use of indoor UV tanning facilities by minors under the age of 18.
The legislative process has moved quickly and we have just learned that Senate Bill 1329 is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Public Health Committee on March 1st at 2pm, and House Bill 1666 is scheduled to be heard by the Human Services Committee on March 2nd at 8am.
Protecting our youth from the dangers of indoor tanning is an important initiative for Skin of Steel please help in one or more of the following ways.
You can make a difference in just 15 minutes:
- Please email your support to the Illinois House and Senate Committee Reps and your legislator. Link here for details.
If you have 30 minutes: - Send the emails noted above; and
- Forward this email to at least 5 family, friends or your family medical professionals and let them know why it's important to support these bills. Jump to email forwarding link.
If you have more time, read further in this email to learn more about the bills and other ways you can become involved including attending an upcoming informational session with newly retired Congresswoman Beth Coulson. We hope we can count on your support in any way that you are able.
Stay tuned as as these bills progress.
With much gratitude for your continued support of the Skin of Steel mission,
Susan Steel, Founder Skin of Steel |

ILLINOIS LEGISLATORS SCHOENBERG AND GABEL DEMONSTRATE THEIR SUPPORT FOR LIVING SKIN SAFE
Current Illinois Admin. Code Title 77; Sec. 795.190 (c) states that children under 14 are prohibited from indoor tanning. A parent/guardian must sign a consent form in the presence of the facility operator if a child is 14-17 years old indicating that they understand the warnings.
This has been the law in Illinois while other states have taken the lead in protecting all minors from the dangers of indoor tanning, which is now recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), most Western European governments, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), and others, as a known carcinogen.
AIM at Melanoma, an important advocacy group nationwide, recently teamed with Skin of Steel Board Members, to help bring the discussion to Springfield.
In February 2011, bills were introduced to both the Illinois House and Senate to increase protection for Illinois children. Senate Bill 1329 was introduced by Senator Jeffery M. Schoenberg of the 9th District, and HB 1666 was introduced was introduced by Representative Robyn Gabel of the 18th District.
