On March 17th all of Thunder Bay is invited to join our Finnish neighbours as they throw their 30th annual St. Urho's Day Party.  At the Finlandia Club, across the street from our store, you can enjoy a parade, food, refreshments and entertainment. And since grasshoppers and wine figure prominently in St. Urho's Day celebrations, we're inviting you to sample real chocolate covered grasshoppers at the store. Good end-of-winter fun! 

 

Also be sure to pick-up your tickets for the Reel Paddling Film Festival happening later this month. Read on for further details.

St. Urho's Day

March 17

Enjoy the 30th Anniversary of Finnish fun

  
For the past 30 years local Finn folk have been celebrating
St. Urho's  Day. 

Legend has it that
St. Urho chased the grasshoppers out of Finland's vineyards; saving their grape crops from ruin.  

Clearly this is a poor excuse to dress up in green and purple and party! 
  
Fortunately we're all invited to join the festivities.  It begins at 12 noon at the Finlandia Club on Bay Street with the "parade of the giant grasshopper" followed by refreshments, traditional Finnish foods and entertainment. It runs until 4 pm.

On St. Urho's Day,
Take A Hike will offer
 Thunder Bay's largest collection of grasshopper candies, lawn ornaments, souvenirs and...FREE samples of chocolate covered grasshoppers.*
  
*Entomologist Dr. Ken Deacon suggests that crickets are a healthier food choice, so chocolate covered crickets (that look like grasshoppers) will be served instead.  :)

Reel Paddling Film Festival

On March 24th the Reel Paddling Film Festival comes to Thunder Bay. The festival showcases some of the year's best canoe, kayak and paddle board films.

It all takes place at the DaVinci Centre (Arthur & Waterloo) starting at 7:00 pm.

Tickets are available at Take A Hike and are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donted to the Thunder Bay division of Scouts Canada.
