You ask why Finnish vineyards are safe from grasshoppers?
Brace yourself for this one. On Saturday, March 19th we're joining our Finnish neighbours for the celebration of St. Urho's Day.
Legend has it that St. Urho chased the grasshoppers out of Finland and saved the important grape crops. Now this is clearly a reason to party, dress in green and purple and have a crazy good time.
Be sure not to miss this year's festivities. At 12 noon everyone is invited to gather outside the Hoito and parade around the block with St. Urho, enormous grasshoppers, politicians and other party goers.
Afterwards you're invited to the Finlandia Club for refreshments, traditional Finnish foods (like fish soup and salt fish) and entertainment. Activities continue until 4 pm.
Also make sure you drop by Take A Hike for your
grasshopper souvenirs and
FREE SAMPLE of chocolate covered grasshoppers*.
Entomologist Dr. Ken Deacon and Take A Hike store owner Diane Petryna are among those promising to give grasshopper treats a try. If successful they will earn "I Ate A Bug Club" buttons and bragging rights for doing so.
*NOTE: Crickets that look very much like grasshoppers will be served. They are also healthier to eat! |
