I recently realized that I have worked in the field of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities for 20 years. As with any other milestone, I reflected on how I've grown and handled changes that have come my way in the previous two decades in relation to my career - the various experiences, the different towns and different jobs, the people I've met, the knowledge I've gained, the naiveté I still at times struggle to overcome. Get ready for a great conference in sunny Corpus Christi. This year we will be celebrating our 37th Annual Convention of the AAIDD Texas Chapter on July 24 - 27, 2012. The conference will take place at the Omni Hotel located right off the waters of the gulf. Currently our committee is planning a convention that will be full of great opportunities to all who attend. AAIDD Texas Chapter Membership Report

Although the number of AAIDD members in Texas usually varies over the course of the year, the average has been around 200 for several years now. However, as of the 1st of February the number was 175 (nationally around 3,500). Much higher numbers were reported in previous decades, but there has been a general decline in membership in professional associations nationally. Economic problems have played a major role, but the trend of younger professionals not joining associations has also had an impact. Changes in Classification of Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder

Some significant changes lie ahead in the diagnosis and classification of Intellectual Disability (ID) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This is a result of the imminent publication of the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V). The various editions of the DSM have been the standard adopted by most governmental agencies, insurers, and clinicians around the world for the diagnosis of mental disorders.
