Our state is in the midst of a legislative session that could have dire consequences for the people we serve. The State's revenue sources fall drastically short of the projected expenses. The short-fall involves many billions of dollars; the estimate varying. Nevertheless, the Legislature is required by the State Constitution to develop a balanced Budget. Although a "rainy day" fund of some $9 billion exists, most legislators have vowed not only not to access these funds, but not to raise taxes either. ... Read More

Paying for memberships in professional organizations is sometimes given low priority, especially in challenging economic times. Although it is certainly an individual choice, I would like to remind you of some of the benefits of membership. For one, it is an investment in your education. Most such investments are eventually worth far more. By becoming a member of the national organization, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, you are automatically a member of the Texas chapter. 2011 Training Opportunities

The Texas Chapter of AAIDD is committed to improving services for people with IDD through professional development activities and community education. This year, in addition to the Annual Convention in San Antonio, the Texas Chapter will be hosting two seminars in the Spring, one on Medical Issues and the other on Behavioral Needs of people with IDD. The first seminar, Medical Mainstreaming, is scheduled for April 21, 2011, and will be held in Houston at The Center.
