| President's Message |
Maria Quintero, Ph.D., President, AAIDD Texas Chapter I was recently asked by a friend why I'm a member of the Texas Chapter of AAIDD. Her question came from her impression that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have "made it;" i.e., their right to a free and appropriate public school education is protected by law; the great majority of people with IDD live in their own homes or with family, and not in institutions; Medicaid provides waiver services as well as medical treatment; and laws are in place to prevent discrimination in the workplace. | AAIDD Texas Chapter Membership Report | | by Pat Craig, President-Elect, AAIDD Texas Chapter
The 2010 Convention was an important learning activity for the membership of the Association. This goes for non-members as well, more of whom have attended past conferences than members. We are hoping that the conference experience this year will lure some non-members into joining. The advantages of membership have been detailed in previous newsletters, and include receipt of two high quality journals, discounts on materials and books published by the national association, and a multitude of opportunities to communicate with other members around the world on special areas of interest. The most recent count of Texas members stands at 212. We are hoping to significantly increase that number over the course of the next year. Please join us. |
