Devising a New Strategy for a Century-old Agency

Episcopal Community Services (ECS) in Philadelphia has been an active social service agency since the late 1800s. Today the organization provides multiple services to vulnerable individuals and families struggling with the impact of poverty. The agency serves about 2000 people annually, sheltering homeless families, educating adults, protecting at-risk children, and helping seniors live safely in their homes. Over the past several years, ECS has quietly but steadily committed to building its organizational capacity to make decisions based on the best available data. Working with TCC Group, ECS put in place a strategy to clarify its mission and vision, and engage a wide range of stakeholders at a deeper level. In doing so, the agency has been able to focus on its core mission and ask critical questions regarding its current strategies. Learn more.

The Power of Collaboration
Collaboration between nonprofits, such as building networks and coalitions, is a central component of policy and advocacy, often working to create change with scarce resources. While there are many reasons why organizations might choose to form or participate in a coalition, it is up to individual leaders to determine whether collaboration is right for their organization.

In a recent session at the Foundation Center, TCC Group's Director of Evaluation Jared Raynor provided an overview of these collaborative approaches. Gonzalo Mercado, Executive Director of El Centro del Immigrante and Chung-Wha Hung, Executive Director of New York Immigration Coalition, provided first-hand accounts of how participating in a network, changed their strategies. Evaluating and Refining a Program to Strengthen Young Jewish Communities

Founded in 2008, Moishe House is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to "provide meaningful Jewish experiences for young adults around the world by supporting leaders in their twenties as they create vibrant home-based Jewish communities." Today, the network includes 37 houses in 14 countries. This past year, the program's 140 residents served over 50,000 attendees.

To help Moishe House better assess and improve upon its innovative work, as well as to maximize successful and sustainable growth, TCC Group developed and piloted a three-year evaluation. Courtesy of Moishe House, we're sharing the key findings and recommendations from the evaluation here.
