Nonprofit Compensation and Governance in Spotlight
In the wake of recent scandals and less than ethical decisions, both foundations and individual donors have been keeping a close eye on the nonprofit sector. However, in recent years, several factors have caused the spotlight on nonprofits and their boards to shine more brightly. In his recent post on The Wealth Manager, President and CEO Richard Mittenthal asks, "What is the Board's role in helping ensure that an organization not only does things right, but does the right thing?" |

TMI vs. ROI Risks and Rewards of Philanthropy 2.0
How are funders using digital technology to tap crowd input for influencing funding decisions and enhance accountability and transparency? Senior Vice President Paul Connolly recently moderated a panel discussion with representatives from the Knight Foundation, Pepsico, Charity Navigator, and the Case Foundation on "Philanthropy 2.0 - The Role of Digital Media, Technology, and Networks" at Yale School of Management's Philanthropy Conference. He shares his thoughts about balancing "too much information" with an appropriate "return on investment" in a Foundation Center blog.

TCC's Personalized Services to Family Foundations
Family foundations face their own unique challenges and opportunities since they not only strive to have a meaningful social impact, but also serve as a unifying vehicle for multiple family generations. TCC provides customized planning, grantmaking, and management support to a valued group of family philanthropies, including the Mary J. Hutchins, Ohrstrom, Panaphil, and Uphill foundations. Collectively, our family foundations have made grants of nearly $10 million over the past year. Our staff consistently provide reliable, responsive, and flexible services -- we do not push clients to use standardized systems and formats that might not be the best fit. Attorneys and bankers refer family foundation clients to us because they realize that we know the nonprofit world well and can provide a broad range of services, from strategy to administrative support. We also understand family dynamics and have first-hand experience in family philanthropy. TCC Group Senior Consultant Ashley Blanchard's recent article in the Association for Small Foundations' newsletter discusses how the Hill-Snowdon Foundation (of which she is the former President and a current trustee) transformed from a check-writing operation around the kitchen table to a strategic and focused grantmaker with greater impact. |

Paul Connolly Presents at Donors Forum February 24, 2011
Senior Vice President Paul Connolly will present "When the Technocratic Becomes Too Much of a Good Thing: Why the Best Work in Philanthropy Requires Multiple Intelligences" at the Donors Forum in Chicago on February 28. Over the past decade, a technocratic approach to philanthropy has become more common and brought numerous benefits to the field. This model typically involves applying business principles to set goals clearly, devise focused strategies, measure results rigorously, and engage with grantees to increase impact. A debate and culture clash has arisen as some in the philanthropy field have criticized such methods and advocated for more humanistic approaches that are values-based, intuitive, and responsive. This session will focus on how a foundation can advantageously employ technocratic methods -- as well as go too far with them, such as by having unrealistic expectations, being too directive, and making evaluation just a report card. It will also highlight how philanthropy could benefit from appreciating the creative tension and following a "best of both worlds" course that blends the objective, proactive, and accountability-oriented technocratic model and a passion-driven, opportunistic, and learning-oriented humanistic mode. Finally, the presentation will provide conceptual frameworks for thinking about these different approaches, practical advice on how to get staff to dynamically integrate them and use the right tool for the right job, and ample time for interactive discussion. Contact the Donors Forum for more details. |
