RCAC/WCEDA Workshop

The new federal prison in McDowell County highlights the government contracting opportunities available for small businesses. This is due to a federal mandate that government purchases between $2,499 and $100,000 be set aside for small businesses.Small, women/minority owned and HUBZone certified business receive special consideration for government contract awards.  Most businesses in Wyoming County can be HUBZone certified.  Bidding on government contracts may seem like a daunting task, but, thankfully, one on one assistance is available.

To help local businesses learn about how they can begin making bids for these government contracts, the BRE&D program will be hosting a presentation by the Regional Contracting Assistance Center (RCAC). The RCAC is a non-profit group created to help small businesses win contracts with the local, state, and federal governments. This event is scheduled for July 7th and will also include a presentation on available loans from the Wyoming County Economic Development Authority.  To sign up or for more information, please contact Monty Jarecke at 304-732-6707, or at jarecke.monty@gmail.com.

Card Check to Open Unionization Appears Dead
The EFCA (Employee Free Choice Act) that was once  pending in congress now appears to have little chance of passing despite continued efforts by labor groups. The EFCA has presented the possibility for mass unionization among small businesses. If passed, employers would be forced to face unionization if more than half of their employees signed cards asking for unionization. Some reasons for its demise begin with a strong lobbying effort by big business to kill the bill by making it unpopular. As well, it seems so much political capital was spent by the current administration to pass health care reform, there was no energy left for the EFCA. Still, a revised form of the bill may be possible but not nearly as potent as the original.  Full Article
