MOSCOW - Iran is close to having the potential to build a nuclear weapon, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday in the clearest indication of Moscow alarm over Tehran's atomic drive.
"Iran is nearing the possession of the potential which in principle could be used for the creation of a nuclear weapon," Medvedev said at a meeting with Russian diplomats quoted by Russian news agencies.

Iran threatens world -- and itself

12 July 2010

Ahmadinejad's Iran -- a term used to distinguish the regime from the people of Iran -- has emerged as a clear and present danger to international peace and security, to regional and Mideast stability, and increasingly, to its own people.
We are witnessing in Ahmadinejad's Iran the toxic convergence of four distinct dangers: the nuclear threat; the genocidal incitement threat; state-sponsored terrorism; and the systematic and widespread violations of the rights of the Iranian people
...While recognizing the gravity of the Iranian regime's nuclear ambitions, we must be careful not to focus on this threat alone and risk marginalizing the other three threats. It is by recognizing the totality of the regime's predations that the case for comprehensive, calibrated, and consequential sanctions becomes undeniable.

All eyes in Iran are on the bazaar, the nation's traditional marketplaces, where tensions have peaked over a proposed tax hike that has fused with other strains of discontent against the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Since Tuesday, strikes in Tehran's old bazaar rage on as merchants still refuse to accept the government's proposal for an increase on their income tax.
By some accounts, the bazaar protest is gathering momentum. In response to the growing demonstrations, increasing numbers of police are stationed not only around the bazaar but in various points throughout Tehran.
...One opposition activist reported that by Thursday, hundreds of students and merchants had gathered in the shoemakers' quarter of the old bazaar, chanting such slogans as, "Death to Ahmadinejad" and "Victory is God's, and victory is near," adding "Death to this deceptive government!"

TEHRAN - Iran's judiciary chief has temporarily halted the execution by stoning of a woman accused of adultery, state news agency IRNA reported on Sunday, quoting a judiciary official.
But Malek Ajdar Sharifi, head of judiciary of East Azerbaijan province, said the crimes committed by Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani were "heinous" and her execution would take place when the judiciary chief decides.
...Mohammadi-Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, had been sentenced to death by stoning after she was found guilty of adultery by an Iranian court, a ruling that has sparked outcry in Western countries.
Ajdar Sharifi said the stay on the execution was temporary.
"Whenever the judiciary chief (Sadeq Larijani) deems it expedient, the verdict will be carried out regardless of Western media propaganda," he said

11 July 2010
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi court ordered the arrest of 39 members of an exiled Iranian opposition group, accusing them of crimes against humanity in helping Saddam Hussein to crush a revolt almost two decades ago, a judge said Sunday.
...Mahdi Uqbaai, a spokesman of the PMOI, said the court was pressured by the government to order the arrests.
"This is a politically motivated decision and it's the last gift presented from the government of (Prime Minister) Nuri al-Maliki to the Iranian government," said Uqbaai.

Putting Human Rights
First
We invite you to write to your national government officials to ask them to freeze all commercial and diplomatic ties with the Iranian regime until there is a full stop to repression of protests in Iran, release of political prisoners and respect for human rights as demanded by the UN Human Rights Council. Please support sanctions of economic relations that only benefit Iranian regime's repressive elite, enable its suppressive forces (IRGC), and prolong its illegitimate rule in Iran, and its export of terror and instability to the region and world.
