US urges firms to step away from Iran

WASHINGTON - The US government urged private companies to go beyond official sanctions and trim back questionable ties with Iran Tuesday, as Washington eyed additional sanctions against the Islamic republic.
A senior Treasury official said firms that decided not to trade with government-linked Iranian companies had played an "extremely important" role in building pressure against Tehran, which is suspected of trying to build a nuclear bomb.
"Voluntary actions of the private sector amplify the effectiveness of government-imposed measures," said Stuart Levey, the top Treasury official dealing with sanctions, in prepared testimony for Congress.

Congress seeks tough Iran sanctions
Associated Press
22 June 2010

WASHINGTON - Democrats and Republicans alike urged the Obama administration Tuesday to endorse legislation that would significantly toughen U.S. sanctions on Iran over its suspect nuclear program and support for extremist groups.
Senators on both sides of the aisle told two top Treasury and State Department officials that they should back a bill that targets exports of gasoline and other refined petroleum products to Iran and bans U.S. banks from doing business with foreign banks that provide financial services to Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
In comments to the officials testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the lawmakers said that previous, less restrictive sanctions had failed to stop Iran from activities that could lead to nuclear weapons development. And they suggested that stability in the Middle East would be compromised unless the new measures are imposed.

NCRI
22 June 2010

NCRI - The Federal Office for the Protection of the German Constitution (BfV) has revealed that the Iranian regime's intelligence efforts in Berlin are concentrated against the main opposition "People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)" and the "National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)." In its annual report, which was publicized on Monday by the Interior Minister and the head of the BfV, the organ says that the main thrust of activities of the Iranian intelligence services is to monitor and decisively confront opposition groups both inside and outside Iran. These services also gather political, economic and scientific intelligence in western countries in addition to actions against the opposition.
Separately, the BfV removed the PMOI and the NCRI from its list of "foreign extremist organizations." The move came after an extensive political and legal campaign by the Iranian Resistance, coupled with efforts of some German parliamentarians and a legal opinion by Professor Hassemer a prominent German jurist.

OTTAWA, Canada-A group of international scholars, politicians, and activists issued a scathing report in Ottawa on Tuesday condemning Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for what they describe as his flaunting international norms regarding nuclear arms, human rights, and terrorism.
The report's authors claim the document contains the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and authoritative witness testimony and documentary evidence to date regarding Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons.
Canadian member of Parliament and professor Irwin Cotler said Ahmadinejad's Iran "has emerged as a clear and present danger to international peace and security, to regional and Middle East stability, and increasingly and alarmingly so, to its own people."
