AEDs

What is an Automated External Defibrillator?

AEDs are specially designed for easy use by a "first responder," who would be the first person to typically arrive on the scene of a medical emergency. A first responder can be an emergency medical services worker, a firefighter or police officer, or it can be a layperson with minimal AED training.  Time to defibrillation, the most critical factor in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survival, can be reduced if an AED is "on-site" and can be brought to the victim quickly. This is one of the reasons that survival rates improve in communities with active AED programs. Remember, every minute that passes before defibrillation reduces survival rates by 7 to10 percent.

An AED is a small, portable device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and prompts the user to deliver a defibrillation shock if it determines one is needed. Once turned on, the AED guides the user through each step of the defibrillation process by providing voice and/or visual prompts.

Dear CBAA Soccer Families:

I hope you had an enjoyable summer and that your families are settling into the new school year. This has been a busy year for CBAA Soccer.

We are nine months into our reintegration of the travel and intramural programs which provides soccer to over 1600 players. The integration has streamlined management and both programs are sharing resources not competing for them.

  • Our IM program is being lead by Jon Irey and Neil Smart is strong with over a thousand players on team from U5 to U18.
  • Buckingham United is fielding over 30 teams led by Ed Beedle and Ryan Hayward. Our training for both players and coaches is continuing - this year we had several travel coaches attain various licenses- out goal is have both head and assistant coaches receive some form of state association license/training
  • We continue our U7/U8 Academy program for our younger players who want a little more soccer.
  • March into Cups (MIC) was very successful - we had great weather in March and we made a modest profit; MIC is Buckingham United's major fund-raising opportunity and we need your support - please contact Dave Fisher our tournament director and volunteer help.
  • Congratulations to our U12G BU Waves who won the NCS Pennsylvania Cup champions this spring and other BU teams who provided our strongest showing in state competition since 2010.
  • Top Soccer lead by former CBAA board member Matt McGahran starts its 4th year and provides opportunity for our local special needs youth to play soccer
  • CBAA is supporting concussion awareness with a seminar on Thursday, September 27 at 7 PM at Holicong Middle School.
  • CBAA has renewed our contract with Positive Coaching Alliance which provides parent and family education on positive and realistic expectations for youth athletes -it is 1-2 hours that will greatly improve and strengthen our children's experience with sports.
  • In January, we will be introducing our CBAA Discount Card to support our capital development programs. The card will provide our members and friends with discounts at several local business - more details to come.
  • Dale Herbst has retired from the CBAA Board serving as its Chair since 1989. Dale's participation of CBAA goes back to the Association's beginnings nearly 40 years ago - his service includes supporting 4 generations of CBAA youth athletes. As we plan a tribute to him - please consider supporting this event.

The CBAA Executive Committee has done a stellar job over the last several months - they and our contractors all work very hard to to provide a safe, fun and learning experience to our youth players.

Consider becoming more involved in supporting our programs - we need more volunteers - this fall we will be starting a snack-stand at Herbst on thw weekends to do some fund-raising for CBAA Soccer - a few hours there over a season is a great way to volunteer.

Please remember to support and respect the efforts of all players and volunteers including the coaches and referees who provide their time and effort to provide a safe and fun playing environment to our all youth soccer players both during home games as well as when we are guests at away contests.

Sincerely,

Robert Law, Acting CBAA Chair and CBAA Soccer President

Best Practices -
Putting the kids first

I thought that I would I would share a recent communication from EPYSA that sets the tone for our season at CBAA/Buckingham United Soccer. There are over 200 Soccer Clubs and 100,000 kids participating in EPYSA soccer. They rely on the support and dedication of the parents, volunteers and professionals that all serve to make youth soccer a great experience. Keeping the "big picture" in mind will help to guide us to achieving our primary goal of "Just Having Fun".

At Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer we provide a fun, safe and healthy game for ALL KIDS...big kids, little kids, tall kids, short kids, young kids, older kids...kids who want to play for one season, kids who want to play for twenty seasons, kids who play strictly for fun, and kids who want to compete at the highest level possible. We want to take a break from the competition and make sure we're all just having fun! Make sure you take time to enjoy the fun soccer brings into your life by kicking a soccer ball , watching your favorite team play, pretend to be your favorite player or even get mom and dad to take you to a game. We want to make sure each and every player, past and present, remembers the fun soccer has brought into their lives.

IM Fall Season

The Fall IM Soccer Season is Underway!

The intramural season is officially under way with over 1200 children and 105 teams participating in the various age divisions of the CBAA intramural program. Our volunteers have been busy assisting with the multiple layers of administration and coordination required to make the league a success.

With a couple of weeks of practice under their belt, teams are looking forward to games starting the weekend of September 8 and running through the end of October (weather permitting).

Micro Soccer  The u5 & u6 Micro soccer program also kicks off on Saturday, September 8. Each session is staffed by a professional coach from Smart Soccer and both programs are overseen by our IM Director of Coaching Neil Smart. With close to 200 kids, this program continues to grow in popularity and the mid-season micro-soccer festivals have become a big hit with the kids.

Junior and Senior Division Intramural Clinics & Training  As we continue to improve the overall experience for all IM participants, the IM program has added additional player development opportunities throughout the season. IM Director of Coaching Neil Smart and his staff will be hosting player clinics and festivals on the following dates in September:

  • Monday, 9/17 - U7 Boys and Girls
  • Wednesday, 9/19 - U12 Boys
  • Thursday, 9/20 - U10 Boys
  • Monday, 9/24 - U8 Boys and Girls
  • Wednesday, 9/26 - U12 Girls
  • Thursday, 9/27 - U10 Girls

Additionally, individual teams in all age groups will receive individual instruction from Neil and his staff throughout the fall season. Coaches will be contacted directly in terms of the timing and content of their age group clinic.

Joint Intramural League  The U15 and U18 boys and girls teams are participating in the Joint Intramural League (JIL) this fall. The JIL is an intra-club league formed by area clubs in an effort to provide additional games to IM clubs that may not have enough teams to support a full game schedule. Teams from surrounding clubs (e.g. Warrington, Horsham, Hatboro, Solebury, South Hampton) have joined together to create a "travel-like" game schedule for the older division teams.

Coaches Clinics and Game  Coaches clinics are being held the week of September 3 with follow-up clinics and coaches games later in September and October. The coach games have been a great success and a fantastic way to bring IM coaches together and establish some camaraderie and consistency in the program.

We ask that every coach in our Junior Division (u7, u8 & u10) familiarize themselves with their respective age group game guidelines so that everybody is on the same page when the games are played. This helps the coaches and ensures that the kids have the best possible environment to learn the game. We will continue to reinforce the game guidelines at the pre-season and follow-up coaching clinics.

Thank You IM Volunteers   We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our IM volunteers. The various Age Group Coordinators (AGC's) have stepped up to help the club and coaches through what is always a very hectic pre-season period. Of course, last but not least, we extend a BIG thank-you to all the coaches for giving their time and energy to help make it a great season for the kids!

Enjoy the season and remember that it is ultimately about the kids having fun, staying active and learning to play the great game of soccer!

TOPSoccer, or The Outreach Program for Soccer, is a nationally run organization under the U.S. Youth Soccer organization. It helps get soccer programs, targeting special needs children, started in communities. This program adjusts to the needs of each individual and allows each child to gain experience in a team sport in a non-competitive environment.

The CBAA TOPSoccer program is offered to children from 5 to 14 years of age (exceptions can be made for older children). The program consists of six to eight weekly one-hour sessions that provide a fun learning environment in which the players can develop soccer-related skills, learn how to play within a team, and build self-confidence in a positive and nurturing environment.

The exact schedule for all sessions will be determined prior to the start of each season and is posted on our team website.

BUSC Wave

The Buckingham United Wave arrived at the US YOUTH SOCCER Region 1 Soccer Championships in Lancaster, PA as the Pennsylvania East U12 11v 11 champions. Their run through Spring Cups featured the Wave's trademark strong defense, excellent goaltending, and timely goals (including a PK shootout), and all with a roster of only 14 players.

The Wave reached Hershey facing what would be extreme temperatures, and a further challenge of going with only 13 players as their teammate, Kaitlyn Harries, went down with an injury in mid-June.

Day 1 had the Wave facing the PA West Champs, Hotspurs Extreme. The teams arrived at the full-sized turf field with temperatures in the low 90's, and the temp on the turf was well over 100 degrees. The teams battled through the elements, turning away good scoring chances from both sides. In the end, the scoreboard showed a 0-0 tie, but both teams walked away knowing they had chances to win. The Wave knew there was still a lot of soccer to play.

On Day 2, the Wave drew a talented team from NJ, the Marlton Lightning. Again, temperatures were in the 90's and the temperature on the turf exceeded 140 degrees. An early goal from Riley Donnelly put the Wave up in the first half. In the second half, Riley Donnelly came up with her second goal of the game. Marlton managed to get one back with 8 minutes to play but the Wave kept their cool despite the heat, with strong defense and some great saves from keeper Gina Russo to earn the 2-1 victory.

Day 3 featured a match against the champs from Delaware, the Hockessin Blaze. Both teams needed a win to advance to the regional semifinals the next day. The heat persisted, and the girls from both teams played evenly throughout the game, with scoring chances on both sides. Again, the Wave's strong defense and stingy midfield play kept the score close, and a goal from Mary Moran with 11 minutes remaining in the second half made the difference, and the Wave won 1-0. The Wave was moving on the to the semis as the winner of Pool B, facing WV Chaos 99, the champs from West Virginia.

The Wave and Chaos 99 played similar style game; taking care of defense and looking for scoring opportunities. After a scoreless first half, the Wave held on to their strategy, knowing they were 9-0 on PK shoot outs if it came to that. However, late in the second half, the Wave earned back-to-back corners, and Molly O'Keefe and Katie Bloom connected on the second for what was the only score of the game. The Wave emerged with a 1-0 victory and a spot in the Region 1 U12 final, against a dominating team from New York East, OMM/World Class 99 Patino.

World Class won Pool A and entered the final scoring 22 goals and surrendering only 1 and were ranked #1 in the nation by GotSoccer.com (the Wave were then ranked #8). The Wave knew they faced their biggest challenge of the season, and stuck with their defensive strategy to try to tame the World Class team's potent offense. The Wave played to a scoreless first half, with Gina Russo turning away several hard shots. However, their opponent scored one early in the second half, and as the Wave adjusted to take more chances to score, they scored a second time. The Wave played out to a 0-2 loss, but proud they were able to play close to such a talented team.

In the end, the Wave left Lancaster proud to lay claim to being a Region 1 finalist, a stronger team, and very much looking forward to the next season. Each player did their job, and Coaches Kevin Herbst, Sue Lubin, and Larry Walsh masterfully managed the strategy to keep the Wave in a position to win. It is the hallmark of every great team, and Buckingham couldn't be more proud of them.
