AEDs

What is an Automated External Defibrillator?

AEDs are specially designed for easy use by a "first responder," who would be the first person to typically arrive on the scene of a medical emergency. A first responder can be an emergency medical services worker, a firefighter or police officer, or it can be a layperson with minimal AED training.  Time to defibrillation, the most critical factor in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survival, can be reduced if an AED is "on-site" and can be brought to the victim quickly. This is one of the reasons that survival rates improve in communities with active AED programs. Remember, every minute that passes before defibrillation reduces survival rates by 7 to10 percent.

An AED is a small, portable device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and prompts the user to deliver a defibrillation shock if it determines one is needed. Once turned on, the AED guides the user through each step of the defibrillation process by providing voice and/or visual prompts.

Best Practices -
Putting the kids first

As we move through the spring season it is always good to keep in mind the best practices that help guide players, parents and coaches. Simply stated, we are all here to foster the development of our children and provide a positive environment so that they can have fun learning to play the game. Many of the issues that we need to resolve usually can be traced back to a lack of focus around maintaining a positive attitude.

Some of the things to remember:

  1. Children are very sensitive to the words of adults, whether a parent or coach: be positive!
  2. Referees have feelings too! - try not to be too critical...
  3. Teams that have parents that get along usually result in everyone having more fun- spend time together.
  4. Coaches are doing their very best to train the kids - Trust their judgment and keep the game day parent coaching to a minimum (It's OK to cheer!!).

There are obviously many more things that fall under the guidelines of good conduct. It is easy to come up with the right answers if we stay focused on the goal of putting the kids first.

TOPSoccer, or The Outreach Program for Soccer, is a nationally run organization under the U.S. Youth Soccer organization. It helps get soccer programs, targeting special needs children, started in communities. This program adjusts to the needs of each individual and allows each child to gain experience in a team sport in a non-competitive environment.

The CBAA TOPSoccer program is offered to children from 5 to 14 years of age (exceptions can be made for older children). The program consists of six to eight weekly one-hour sessions that provide a fun learning environment in which the players can develop soccer-related skills, learn how to play within a team, and build self-confidence in a positive and nurturing environment.

The exact schedule for all sessions will be determined prior to the start of each season and is posted on our team website.
